Patient Companion - Emergency Department

Mater Volunteers

Patient Companion volunteers provide companionship, care and support to patients, family members and visitors in the Emergency Department.

Experience in communicating with a broad range of people and the ability to work in busy, face paced environment are essential skills for this role.

Patient Companion duties include

  • Support triage by ensuring patient and visitors are redirected/escorted to relevant Emergency Department area, assisting with wheelchairs as required

  • Respond to non-clinical and appropriately direct all clinical enquiries from patients and visitors

  • Provide people in the waiting rooms with tea & coffee refreshments where applicable

  • Provide companionship to patients & family members across all areas

  • Promote patient comfort e.g. tea/coffee, buzzer within reach, personal items at hand, blankets, books, magazines etc.

  • Provide meal assistance including reading of menu, ordering of meal, opening of packaging and encouragement during meal times

  • Provide tea/coffee for family or visitors

  • Assist with discharges to Transit Lounge or Main Entrance

  • Assist staff with administrative tasks e.g. collation of charts and resource packs

Available shifts are 8am-11am 11am-2pm and 2pm-5pm Monday-Friday.

Volunteers must be able to commit to the same shift weekly for a minimum period of 4 months.

All Mater Volunteers receive on boarding and training to ensure you are confident in your role.
