Experienced Welder, Maritime heritage vessel restoration

****Want to make a difference with your volunteering, preserving maritime history while spending your time with a great team in a friendly environment? **** *Sydney Heritage Fleet is a volunteer organisation dedicated to preserving, restoring and operating vessels which include Tall Ship James Craig, 1912 K-class ferry Kanangra, coastal steamship John Oxley, 1902 steam tug Waratah, 1902 VIP launch Lady Hopetoun, 1903 schooner Boomerang, Tugs and several diesel motor launches.
The Sydney Heritage Fleet workshop currently has as its main project the former Moreton Bay steam pilot ship, John Oxley. A skilled welder with fabrication experience is needed to assemble a complex boiler exhaust uptake, leading to the funnel. New oil burners have already been installed and these require a newly designed pair of uptakes. Do you have years of experience working heavy sheet metal and steel sections. and a desire to help complete this massive task? If you can cut, grind, weld or just want to learn alongside experienced hands, we need you. Our fabrication crew is flat out — another pair of gloves makes a real difference.
You will join a very happy band of workers in the cool sea breezes of Rozelle Bay. An extensive mechanical workshop includes heavy radial drills, presses, welding machines, power tools of all types, air and electric. On your first day you will get a cheerful welcoming greeting, followed by orientation and safety training and a guided tour of the work sites centring around the many vessels.
Site access is by light rail, many buses on the 500-series routes across Anzac Bridge and dedicated member-only parking.
Qualifications desired but not necessary, provide demonstrated experience and quality work. Some work will be below waterline. therefore competent solid waterproof welds necessary. Other work is highly structural and needs to be solid as well as visually satisfying. And some overhead welds necessary.
