The Role In this volunteer role, you’ll be paired one‑on‑one with an older person to provide regular, friendly social visits in their home. Visits are relaxed and guided by shared interests and may include conversation, enjoying the outdoors, playing simple games, listening to music or reminiscing. You don’t need special skills—just reliability, patience and a genuine interest in connecting with someone new while making a positive difference in your local community.

Our Client Our client is a welcoming man in his late 70s who lives independently and enjoys the simple pleasures of life. A former plumber, he has a lifelong love of trucks, utes and anything mechanical, and still enjoys pottering in his workshop attached to the carport. He’s especially creative—once making unique jewellery from wheel nuts—and loves chatting about the tools and projects he’s collected over the years.

He also enjoys spending time outdoors, mowing his garden, fishing, and having a relaxed yarn on his deck, which boasts lovely views across the bay. In his working years, he loved catching up with mates over a beer at the pub, and he still values friendly conversation and companionship. He is hard of hearing and lives with a dementia diagnosis, so a calm, patient volunteer who enjoys easy-going chats and shared moments will be a wonderful match.

As we age our support needs may grow and change. For some people communicating and expressing themselves may become challenging:

• Difficulty finding words
• Speaking fluently but not making sense
• Difficulty expressing their emotions
• Getting frustrated with themselves and the people around them. A caring and positive attitude when speaking to someone can make a big difference.

About You:

• Possess clear communication skills
• Compassionate, patient and an excellent listener
• Passionate about giving back to your community
• Conducts yourself with open-mindedness and respect, ensuring the privacy, confidentiality, and dignity of our clients is always maintained
• Comfortable using technology to provide feedback and connect with the Volunteer Program
• Availability for a flexible six-month commitment
