Position Description: Eco Hut Caretaker (Volunteer) Organization: Darling Downs Environment Council (DDEC)

Location: The Eco Hut, Toowoomba

Reports to: DDEC Management Committee / Volunteer Coordinator

Commitment: Flexible (e.g., 2–4 hours per fortnight or as negotiated)

  1. Purpose of the Role The Eco Hut is the "face" of DDEC in the community. The Eco Hut Caretaker ensures the facility remains a clean, welcoming, and inspiring space for members, visitors, and volunteers. This role is vital in maintaining our professional image and ensuring our physical headquarters reflects our commitment to sustainability and order.

  2. Key Responsibilities A. Beautification & Landscaping

Maintain the entrance and immediate surrounds to ensure a "curb appeal" that invites the public in.

Light gardening, including weeding, pruning, and caring for indoor or balcony plants.

Assisting with the setup of seasonal displays or educational signage in the garden/entry area.

B. Tidying & Organization

Maintaining the order of the library, resource materials, and merchandise displays.

Ensuring the kitchen and common areas are clutter-free and organized.

Assisting with the "re-homing" of donated items or archives to keep the space functional.

C. Cleaning & Maintenance

Light cleaning duties (dusting, sweeping, wiping down surfaces).

Ensuring waste is correctly sorted into compost, recycling, and landfill streams.

Reporting any minor repairs or safety hazards (tripping hazards, leaks, etc.) to the committee.

  1. Skills & Attributes Attention to Detail: A "good eye" for making a space look professional and cared for.

Self-Motivated: Ability to work independently and identify tasks that need doing without constant supervision.

Eco-Conscious: Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) green cleaning methods—we prefer vinegar and bicarb over harsh chemicals!

Physical Ability: Capacity for light physical labor, including gardening and moving light furniture or boxes.

A brief induction on the Eco Hut’s safety procedures and chemical-free cleaning protocols.

Reliability and good communication regarding attendance.
