Glen Eira Adult Learning Centre Inc (GEALC) is an award-winning not for profit community-based Registered Training Organisation (RTO), Learn Local organisation and an Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) provider.

GEALC provides quality, affordable, accessible education for adults to achieve their full potential and extend their involvement in activities in the community. It offers a wide range of programs and activities including:

• English as an Additional Language (EAL) and pre-accredited training • Digital technology training including Microsoft Office programs and iPad • Job ready training including Employable Me, Intro to Health Services, Aged Care, Hospitality, Medical Reception, Bookkeeping and MYOB • Health & Wellbeing programs including Yoga, Art & Drawing, sewing, walking and singing groups • Community engagement events (Multicultural Festival, Chatty Cafe, monthly Community Meal Program, Biggest Morning Tea, Victorian Seniors’ Festival, Social Inclusion Lunch, Health & Wellbeing workshops).

The role of the Volunteer Class Assistant is to provide quality educational support to the class tutor and the students. Ideally, the assistant will: a) have a basic knowledge of how people learn and in particular the development of language and literacy skills b) assist students to improve their English language skills (through various speaking, listening, reading and writing tasks) as directed by the class tutor c) assist the class tutor as required, for example when the teacher is conducting assessments, the assistant may need to supervise the class d) assist students to direct their own learning e) assist in the continuous improvement of students.

Desirable Skills and Qualities • Prior teaching experience (not essential) • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Interpersonal skills and flexibility • Computer skills: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer. • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment • Experience in a similar setting • Empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
