Glen Eira Adult Learning Centre Inc (GEALC) is an award-winning not for profit community-based Registered Training Organisation (RTO), Learn Local organisation and an Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) provider.

GEALC provides quality, affordable, accessible education for adults to achieve their full potential and extend their involvement in activities in the community. It offers a wide range of programs and activities including: • English as an Additional Language (EAL) and pre-accredited training • Digital technology training including Microsoft Office programs and iPad • Job ready training including Employable Me, Intro to Health Services, Aged Care, Hospitality, Medical Reception, Bookkeeping and MYOB • Health & Wellbeing programs including Yoga, Art & Drawing, sewing, walking and singing groups • Community engagement events (Multicultural Festival, Chatty Cafe, monthly Community Meal Program, Biggest Morning Tea, Victorian Seniors’ Festival, Social Inclusion Lunch, Health & Wellbeing workshops).

GEALC operates as an incorporated, not for profit organisation with over 600 members / participants from a wide cross section of the local community.

GEALC runs a range of community events and activities to connect people in the community. Chatty Cafe & Event Volunteers provide support in the lead up to the event and/or on the day.

The Chatty Cafe runs every Thursday from 11.15am - 12.15pm during school term. The Community Meal Program runs on the 3rd Thursday of each month during school term. Community Events run on various dates throughout the year.

The GEALC Chatty Café, part of the national Chatty Café Scheme, provides a welcoming space for people to connect over coffee and conversation to reduce social isolation. This runs every Thursday from 11.15am – 12.15pm.

  • Pick up food from 3 local bakeries on Wednesday afternoons during the school term and bring the food items back to GEALC
  • Assist in setting dining area and cutting up bakery items
  • Take / make coffee orders from attendees
  • Engage in conversation with attendees
  • Assist in cleaning the dining area at the conclusion of each Chatty Cafe session

The GEALC Community Meal Program, is a monthly dinner event that brings together residents experiencing loneliness or financial hardship to share a nutritious meal in a safe and inclusive environment. Community Meals are scheduled from 5pm – 7pm

  • Assist with shopping for the meal on Thursday afternoon
  • Assist with helping to prepare the meal with attendees
  • Assist with setting the dining area
  • Assist with washing dishes and cooking equipment and cleaning the dining area at the conclusion of each Community Meal

General Tasks (may include): • Work with Event Coordinator in event planning and support (in the lead-up to GEALC community events) • Event and program communications and promotions • Event set-up • Supporting stalls and/or workshop activities • Welcoming event participants • Registrations • Photography • Event clean-up • Food / drink serving and or preparation • Event runner • Basic admin tasks and photocopying.

Desirable Skills and Qualities • Interest in supporting community events • Coffee making, food handling and service • Ability and willingness to work with people that may be experiencing isolation / loneliness • Ability and willingness to work with people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds • Good communication and interpersonal skills • Reliable and Punctual • Able to work independently and as part of a team
