About Sharks And Rays Australia Research Ltd.

We are a well-established not for profit organisation in Far North Queensland, that works with endangered sharks and rays, including sawfish, both in Queensland (field work, collaborations with Aboriginal Land and Sea Ranger groups, collaborations with local schools) and Australia wide (Citizen science project identifying sawfish distributions). As a not-for-profit research organisation, the governance of SARA-r is divided into the business side (Board of Directors) and the research side (Research Board). Our research board brings together 7 internationally renowned biologists, who represent essential expertise on the unique sharks and rays of Northern Australia

Duties & Responsibilities:

This non-executive (voluntary) board director will have demonstrated fund raising and marketing experience.

Key components:

  • The Board Director (Fund Raising) is required to attend Board meetings (currently every 6 weeks, 2 hours per meeting) and other meetings, where relevant and as required.

  • Take a practical role and take action where required

  • Develop funding raising strategy and fund-raising targets

  • Leads the fund-raising activities of the organisation

  • Together with the Chairperson, lead the board to meeting these financial targets

  • Develop and maintain stakeholder register

  • Assist the Chairperson and Directors in the conduct of meetings and their director duties and governance obligations and responsibilities.

  • Attend research board meetings (3-4 per year)

Other

  • SARA is a small not-for-profit which requires its non-executive board directors to take responsibility and fulfil a hands-on role, particularly until the organisation can support further staffing complement
  • Perform any other duties as required by our Constitution.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated fund raising capability and marketing skills gained in other not-for-profits or other roles
  • Commitment to the role and ability to devote required time and diligence
  • Ability to take a hands-on role with fund raising and awareness of the role of SARA
  • Ability and willingness to share knowledge and experience
  • Understanding of Board member duties and responsibilities
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
