Parent Peer Support Group Facilitator (Volunteer)

Help Create a Safe and Supportive Space for Families of Transgender and Gender Diverse Young People

Vic Park Community Centre (VPCC) is seeking a compassionate and community-minded volunteer to facilitate a monthly peer support group for parents, carers, family members and friends of transgender and gender diverse young people.

This newly established group provides a welcoming space for people navigating the joys, questions and challenges that can arise when supporting a transgender or gender diverse young person. It offers an opportunity for participants to connect with others who understand their experiences, share knowledge, build confidence and feel less alone.

As Volunteer Facilitator, you'll help create a safe, respectful and inclusive environment where meaningful conversations and peer connection can flourish.

The Opportunity

This monthly group is designed for parents, carers, family members and supporters of transgender young people who are looking for connection, understanding and shared experiences.

The role is not counselling-based. Instead, the facilitator helps guide respectful discussion, encourages participation and supports a welcoming atmosphere where participants can learn from one another and build supportive relationships.

VPCC provides the venue, organisational support and promotion of the group through our networks.

Key Responsibilities

• Facilitate a monthly peer support group meeting
• Welcome participants and help create a safe, inclusive environment
• Encourage respectful discussion and peer connection
• Support conversations around parenting, family relationships, advocacy and wellbeing
• Help maintain appropriate boundaries and group expectations
• Assist with simple session setup and pack down
• Liaise with VPCC staff regarding group needs and logistics
• Foster a culture of respect, confidentiality and inclusion

Skills and Experience

We welcome expressions of interest from people who have:

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Empathy, compassion and active listening abilities
• Confidence facilitating conversations in group settings
• Understanding of LGBTQIA+ inclusion and affirming practices
• A commitment to creating safe and respectful spaces

Lived experience as a parent, carer, family member, ally or member of the transgender and gender-diverse community is highly valued.

Experience in facilitation, community development, peer support, education, counselling or social work is welcomed but not essential.

Time Commitment

• One monthly group meeting
• Occasional communication with VPCC staff

Requirements

• Commitment to inclusion, respect and confidentiality
• Ability to facilitate conversations in a supportive and impartial manner
• National Police Clearance and Working With Children Check
