Some children can't go home. For them, a long-term foster carer isn't just a placement - they're family. Key Assets Australia is looking for dedicated volunteers - individuals and families - who can offer a child or young person a stable and loving home until they reach adulthood and beyond. Full training, a dedicated social worker, and comprehensive wrap-around support are provided every step of the way.

About the Role Long-term foster carers provide a continuous, stable home for children and young people for whom returning to their birth family is not possible. These children remain in care until they turn 18, and in many Australian states, the option exists to continue that support for a few years beyond that as they transition to independent living.
This is one of the most profound commitments a person can make and one of the most rewarding and Key Assets Australia walks alongside you for every step of that journey.
Key Duties As a volunteer long-term foster carer, you will:
- Provide a consistent, loving and therapeutic home environment for a child or young person throughout their childhood and adolescence
- Support the child's physical, emotional, developmental and educational needs over the long term
- Work as part of an ongoing care team with your dedicated KAA social worker, therapists, educators and other professionals
- Help the child maintain connections to their birth family, culture and community where it is safe and in their best interests to do so
- Attend regular Support and Coaching sessions with your allocated social worker to reflect, plan and celebrate progress
- Participate in ongoing training to continuously develop your skills in trauma-informed and therapeutic care
- Support the child's transition toward independence as they approach adulthood
Skills and Experience Needed No formal qualifications are required. KAA welcomes volunteers from all walks of life - single or partnered, renting or owning, from all cultures, faiths, sexual orientations and gender identities, including LGBTQIA+ households. There is currently a particular shortage of carers for older children, children with high and complex needs, and sibling groups of three or more.
