Harold Hawthorne Community Centre is a not-for-profit organisation based in Carlisle within the Town of Victoria Park. We provide a range of services and programs that support older people and people living with disability to remain independent, connected, and living in their own homes for as long as possible.
We are currently seeking friendly and reliable volunteers to join our Meals on Wheels team as Drivers and Delivery Assistants.
About the Role
Meals on Wheels volunteers do much more than deliver food. For many clients, you may be one of the few people they see during the day, making your visit an important social connection.
Volunteers work in teams of two, consisting of a Driver and a Delivery Assistant.
Drivers are responsible for:
- Driving the Harold Hawthorne Community Centre vehicle (cars and vans).
- Following the allocated delivery route.
- Assisting with loading meals and chiller bags into the vehicle.
- Supporting safe and efficient meal deliveries.
Delivery Assistants are responsible for:
- Delivering meals from the vehicle to the client's front door.
- Greeting clients and providing a friendly social interaction.
- Conducting informal well-being checks by observing and speaking with clients during deliveries.
- Assisting with meal temperature checks and delivery documentation where required.
Some clients may require meals to be taken inside their home, while others request their meals be left at the door (in a freezer container).
Volunteer Shifts
- Monday to Friday
- Commencing between 7:00am and 7:30am
- Finishing approximately 10:00am to 11:00am (depending on the delivery run)
What We're Looking For
- Friendly, reliable and compassionate individuals.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- A genuine interest in supporting older people and people living with disability.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Current driver's licence (Drivers only).
No experience is necessary. Full training and ongoing support will be provided.
By volunteering with Meals on Wheels, you'll help deliver more than a meal — you'll provide connection, reassurance and support to members of our local community.
