Purpose of the Role

Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help deliver engaging nature-based activities over the september school holidays.

The purpose of this role is to help children and families connect with nature through hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity, discovery and appreciation for the natural environment. Volunteers will support the delivery of fun, interactive activities while creating a welcoming and inclusive experience for visitors of all ages.

Our greeter roles are usually a fortnightly shift, but this one-off volunteer opportunity, designed to give prospective volunteers a chance to experience the Environment Centres and explore whether ongoing volunteering may be right for them.

On the Day Volunteers will be given the opportunity to assist with multiple environmentally engaging activities such as a craft activity, honey tasting and a nature discovery table.

Goals and duties:

  • Make all visitors to Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre feel comfortable and included
  • To provide visitors with basic information about what they can see and do at the site and where facilities are located
  • Provide nature-based sensory walks in Brisbane City Council reserves.
  • Offer a unique experience and comradery to participants and provide a safe environment for people to get familiar with bushwalking.
  • Answering questions within the limits of their knowledge relating to the reserves
  • Point out unique flora, fauna, markings, droppings or other visually or auditory engaging elements
  • Deliver one of three volunteer activities for the general public on the day (you'll be working directly under environment centre officer).

Requirements of volunteering at Karawatha

  • Self-motivated & enthusiastic
  • Enjoys starting conversations and meeting new people
  • Enjoy learning and sharing knowledge
  • Shows initiative and looks for opportunities to engage with visitors
  • Comfortable talking with front of small groups of people
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • BlueCard working with children check will be required, we help you obtain this if you do not have one.

  • Wednesday 30th of September 9am-12pm

All applicants will be required to hold a Blue Card Working with Children Card or be eligible to apply. We can assist with this process if required. Once an application has been lodged with Blue Card simply email through the reference number and we can connect you to Council as a volunteer.
