About All Together Thriving

All Together Thriving is a community charity helping people feel less alone through connection, wellbeing and practical support. We support cancer survivors, children with additional needs and their families through Healthy Happy Friends and Move Cancer Out of This Town.

We are seeking a volunteer Board Director, Customer / People Pillar to guide oversight of people, programs, safeguarding and participant outcomes.

About the role

This is a governance role, not an operational delivery role. Working with the Chair, Board, CEO, Program Lead and team members, you will help ensure programs are safe, high quality, participant-centred and aligned to purpose.

The role leads the Customer / People Pillar and chairs the People Subcommittee. It supports good decision making, community impact, culture and capability as the organisation grows.

Key responsibilities

You will help the Board by:

  • Keeping participant, family and community needs central to decisions
  • Leading the People Subcommittee and reporting recommendations
  • Reviewing participant outcomes, including wellbeing, connection and reduced isolation
  • Monitoring program quality across both flagship programs
  • Overseeing safeguarding, child-safe practice, wellbeing and duty of care
  • Reviewing impact data, including wellbeing and connection indicators
  • Supporting inclusion, cultural safety, accessibility and reduced barriers
  • Contributing to volunteer, ambassador, facilitator and peer leader frameworks
  • Supporting staff wellbeing, burnout risk and people capability discussions
  • Recommending people-related policies and improvement priorities
  • Escalating serious safeguarding matters through the agreed process
  • Contributing to strategy, growth, risk and sustainability discussions

Strategy alignment

This role supports the People Pillar and 2026 strategy, including participant growth, 70%+ wellbeing outcomes, testimonials, impact data, reduced access barriers, early help-seeking, safe program delivery, facilitator and volunteer training, safeguarding, culture and lived-experience leadership.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for someone with strong people, program or community capability, practical judgement and a values-aligned approach.

The right person will have:

  • A relevant degree in community services, social work, psychology, public health, education, health, human services, program management, people and culture, or a related field
  • Experience in program delivery, community services, health, wellbeing, child and family services, cancer support, social impact, safeguarding, volunteer leadership, or people and culture
  • The ability to understand participant needs and community outcomes
  • Confidence interpreting program and impact information
  • The ability to ask thoughtful questions and explain issues clearly
  • An understanding of safeguarding, accountability, inclusion and good governance
  • A collaborative approach and genuine interest in community impact

Previous Board or not-for-profit experience is welcome, but not essential.

Board expectations

All Board members prepare for and attend meetings, contribute to strategy, risk, governance and sustainability, act in the organisation’s best interests, maintain confidentiality, declare conflicts, support our values and act as ambassadors where appropriate.

Time commitment

Approx. 6–8 hours per month, including Board meetings, People Subcommittee meetings, reading papers and occasional follow-up. The People Subcommittee meets every 6 weeks before the Board meeting.

Why join us

Help shape a purpose-led charity deeply connected to community. You will join a Board focused on doing things well and building something sustainable that can make a real difference.

Diversity and inclusion

We welcome diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. We value lived experience, empathy, integrity and a community-centred approach.
