About the Role
Wesley Volunteer Visitors is looking for a compassionate Mandarin and/or Cantonese speaking volunteer to visit an elderly person in the North Rocks and Lidcombe area. This role is about offering friendship, companionship and meaningful connection to someone who may be experiencing loneliness, limited family contact, language barriers, or a longing to speak in the language that feels most like home.
For many older people, especially those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, a friendly visit can be more than just company. It can be a reminder that they are seen, respected and still connected to the wider community. By sharing conversation, listening to stories, enjoying a cup of tea, or simply spending quiet time together, you can bring comfort, dignity and joy into someone’s life.
Your time may feel small to you, but to an older person waiting for connection, it can become the highlight of their week.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Aged 18 years or older
• Ability to speak Mandarin and/or Cantonese
• Willingness to commit to regular visits (minimum one hour per fortnight)
• Minimum Commitment of 12 months
• Completion of an interview process
• Successful National Criminal History Check
• Provision of referee checks
• Willingness to follow Wesley Mission policies, including confidentiality and professional boundaries
What You’ll Do
• Visit an older person regularly (usually once a week or fortnight)
• Provide companionship through conversation and shared interests
• Help enhance their sense of belonging and emotional wellbeing
• Build a genuine, rewarding connection
What You’ll Gain
• A deep sense of purpose and contribution
• New friendships and heartfelt connections
• Flexible volunteering that fits into your lifestyle
• Full support and guidance from our friendly team
No experience needed
Wesley Mission will provide training, support, and ongoing guidance every step of the way.
If you speak Mandarin and/or Cantonese and have a heart for supporting older people, we would love to hear from you. Your kindness could help someone feel understood, included and deeply valued.
This volunteer opportunity is especially suited to someone who is patient, warm, reliable and comfortable building a caring one-to-one connection over time.
