Sid the Seagull mascot!

The SunSmart program has played a major role in shifting Australia’s attitudes and behaviours around sun protection, and Sid continues to be a beloved symbol of this life‑saving message.
As Sid the Seagull, you’ll step into the flippers of our energetic, non‑verbal mascot to promote sun safety at community events, schools, openings and festivals. This is a fun, physical, high‑energy role perfect for volunteers who enjoy performing, engaging with children and supporting a great cause.
Sid communicates through gestures—high fives, waves, dancing, posing for photos—and helps reinforce positive sun protection behaviours.
A trained minder will accompany Sid at all times to guide you, communicate with the public, and to ensure Sid’s personal space and safety are respected.
Mascot performance: Wear the Sid the Seagull costume and bring the SunSmart message to life at events and school visits.
#Crowd engagement: Interact with children and families, pose for photos, dance along to SunSmart songs and celebrate positive sun protection behaviours.
SunSmart advocacy:
Share educational materials and help promote awareness of UV levels and sun safe habits.
Event support:
Work alongside Cancer Council staff and volunteers to create a positive, memorable experience for the community.
Willingness to join a pool of volunteers available for ad‑hoc events throughout the year at a range of locations.
Physical requirements
Costume tolerance: Ability to comfortably wear and move in the Sid costume for periods of time. Height range: Ideally between 160cm and 180cm to ensure safe costume fit. Energy and mobility: This is an active role involving walking, waving, dancing and interacting with crowds.
#Screening Requirements: The successful applicant must undertake and maintain a National Police Clearance and may require a further Department of Human Services Working with Children Check (these will be provided by Cancer Council SA).
#Note: Given the visual restrictions within the head of the costume, it is also recommended that those with any vision impairments do not wear the costume. For example, if the individual wears glasses (and cannot wear contact lenses), there is the potential for these to become fogged up within the suit and impair vision.
The successful applicant must be non-smokers and not use e cigarettes at Cancer Council SA sites or whilst representing Cancer Council SA offsite, and are required to promote a healthy lifestyle and adopt a SunSmart attitude.
