Position Overview

The Curator will play a key role in the planning, development, presentation, and evaluation of the Team Rainbow Art Show.

Working under the guidance of Team Rainbow's Event Manager and Committee, the Curator will assist with the artistic direction of the exhibition, artist liaison, exhibition planning, installation, presentation, documentation, and evaluation.

This role provides an opportunity for someone who always wanted to be a Curator or to relive their skills as a Curator, to gain practical experience across the full lifecycle of a community-based art show, from concept development through to public presentation and post-event review.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Curatorial Planning

• Assist in developing the curatorial vision and exhibition theme. • Research contemporary and community-based exhibition practices. • Contribute to the selection and placement of artworks. • Develop exhibition narratives and interpretive concepts. • Assist in ensuring artworks align with exhibition objectives and available exhibition space.

Artist Liaison

• Communicate with participating artists. • Coordinate artwork submissions and supporting documentation. • Assist artists with exhibition requirements and deadlines. • Maintain records of artworks and artist information. • Support the collection of artist biographies, statements, and promotional materials.

Exhibition Development

• Assist with exhibition layout and floor planning. • Prepare artwork labels and exhibition text. • Contribute to catalogue and promotional content. • Support exhibition logistics and scheduling.

Installation and Presentation

• Assist with artwork handling and installation. • Support exhibition setup and pack-down. • Monitor exhibition presentation standards. • Ensure artworks are displayed professionally and safely.

Event Support

• Assist during the Art Show Gala Opening. • Engage with artists, visitors, and stakeholders. • Support public engagement activities and artist interactions. • Assist with exhibition tours or presentations where appropriate.

Documentation and Evaluation

• Assist in documenting the exhibition process. • Collect visitor feedback and attendance data. • Contribute to post-event reporting and evaluation. • Prepare reflections on curatorial outcomes and lessons learned.

Required Skills and Attributes

Essential • Current, past enrolment in a relevant university programme (eg Visual Arts, Fine Arts, Curatorial Studies, Arts Management, Museum Studies, Creative Industries, or related discipline) or possess a genuine interest. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail. • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. • Interest in contemporary art, community arts, and cultural engagement. • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines. • Professional and inclusive approach to working with diverse communities.

Desirable

• Previous experience in exhibition, gallery, museum, or arts administration environments. • Experience using Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace. • Graphic design, photography, social media, or promotional skills. • Knowledge of rainbow+ arts and cultural communities.

Expected Availability

The successful applicant should be available for key event dates:

• Friday 24 July 2026 – Art Show Gala Opening • Saturday 25 July 2026 – Art Show Exhibition + Saturday night Charity Dinner • Sunday 26 July 2026 – Art Show Exhibition and Pack-Down

Supervision and Support

The Curator will receive:

• Regular supervision meetings. • Mentoring from experienced Team Rainbow committee members. • Opportunities to collaborate with artists, volunteers, sponsors, and community stakeholders. • Structured feedback throughout the placement. • Assistance in achieving placement requirements where applicable.
