By sharing your creativity, conversation and encouragement, you'll help create a welcoming environment where patients can express themselves, build confidence and enjoy meaningful social interaction.
As an Arts & Crafts Activities Volunteer, you'll work alongside ward staff to facilitate creative activities that reduce boredom, encourage social engagement and promote positive wellbeing. You'll support patients in both the ward activity room and individual patient rooms, helping them participate at their own pace in a safe and supportive environment.
In this role you may:
- Facilitate art, craft and other recreational activities for patients.
- Set up and pack away art and craft materials before and after sessions.
- Research new craft ideas using online resources or bring your own creative inspiration.
- Encourage participation in games, puzzles and other diversional activities.
- Work closely with ward staff to ensure activities are appropriate and safe, particularly when using items such as scissors or glue.
- Spend time chatting with patients and their families, offering friendly, non-clinical companionship.
- Offer refreshments such as tea and coffee to patients and visitors when appropriate.
- Welcome patients, families and visitors and help orient them to hospital facilities, including cafés, parking, ATMs and other services.
- Restock and maintain the ward craft trolley to ensure activities are always ready to go.
We're looking for volunteers who are:
- Friendly, compassionate and respectful.
- Passionate about arts, crafts or other creative hobbies.
- Comfortable engaging with people experiencing mental illness.
- Patient, encouraging and a good listener.
- Creative and willing to research or develop new activity ideas.
- Reliable, adaptable and able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Committed to maintaining confidentiality and respecting patient privacy.
- Have a genuine interest in supporting people experiencing mental illness.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- A satisfactory National Police Clearance (renewable every three years).
Creative activities can have a powerful impact on mental wellbeing. By volunteering your time and creativity, you'll help patients connect with others, discover new interests and enjoy moments of calm, purpose and achievement during their hospital stay. Whether you're painting, making crafts, playing games or simply sharing a conversation over a cup of tea, you'll be helping create a more positive and supportive experience for people when they need it most.
