zero2hero is a youth mental health education and suicide prevention charity that runs a variety of programs for young people throughout W.A, including school programs, clinics, education forums and our 5-day Youth & Leadership camps.
Through Camp Hero and other programs, zero2hero aims to educate, engage, and empower young minds, equipping them with mental health knowledge, resilience, self-awareness, communication and leadership skills.
Our Camp Hero Youth and Camp Hero Leadership programs run across 5 days and 4 nights in the school holidays in the down south of W.A.
Young people get to spend 5 days tech free, meeting new people, pushing themselves outside of their comfort zone, participating in education workshops and enjoying outdoor activities – to become mental health leaders in their communities.
What you’ll do:
- Volunteer as a mentor during a 5 day / 4 night Camp Hero program: support, listen, and role model for young people aged 13 to 18 (depending which Camp Hero program) as they go through the camp experience - but don't worry you'll be in dormitory style accommodation, not camping.
- Stand alongside young people as they engage in workshops, outdoor activities, team challenges and mental health education, holding space for them to explore ideas, wellbeing, resilience, peer relationships, self-awareness and leadership.
- Actively participate and “walk the talk”: role modelling positive attitudes, empathy, active listening and supportive behaviour throughout the camp – while giving all activities a go.
- Provide a safe, caring presence, encourage young people, listen, support them, and help foster peer connection and community.
Skills & experience needed:
- Must be aged 21+
- No mask, cape or formal qualifications required.
- A positive attitude, empathy, open-mindedness, the ability to connect with young people, and a willingness to be present, supportive and respectful.
- WWCC and Police clearance required
- First Aid, Bronze Medallion, Mental Health First Aid, ASSIST or other similar qualifications are highly desirable
Why Mentor? You get to make a real, meaningful difference while you help young people grow confidence, resilience, and mental healthy habits; support them through important formative experiences and contribute to suicide prevention.
- Personal growth: mentors often speak about transformational experiences, as they witness growth in young people, they themselves deepen empathy, leadership, communication and mentoring skills.
- Feel good factor: being part of something bigger, contributing to a community cause, joining a passionate team, and knowing your time and care can positively impact someone’s life.
- Connection and community: join like-minded volunteers, work with a dedicated mental health charity, and build relationships with peers, mentees, and a wider support network.
