The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is promoting this opportunity on behalf of Alamein Neighbourhood & Learning.

Alamein is a welcoming neighbourhood house in Ashburton, opposite Alamein train station. We provide adult education, community support, wellbeing, lifestyle and social connection programs for local residents. Our work supports people to learn, connect, participate and feel valued in their local community.

The Committee of Management provides governance, strategic direction and oversight for the Centre. The Treasurer plays an important role in helping the Committee understand Alamein’s financial position and make sound decisions for the future.

About the role

The Treasurer provides financial oversight, advice and assurance to the Committee of Management. This is a governance role, not a bookkeeping role. Day-to-day financial administration is managed by the Executive Officer, bookkeeper, staff and external advisers.

The Treasurer will help the Committee to:

  • understand financial reports, budgets and cash flow
  • monitor financial risks and funding commitments
  • support annual budgeting and financial planning
  • prepare for the annual audit
  • present the Treasurer’s report at the Annual General Meeting
  • support good financial governance and responsible use of Centre funds

We are looking for someone who has

  • a strong understanding of the not-for-profit sector
  • experience in a Treasurer, finance, accounting, audit, bookkeeping, business management or financial governance role
  • the ability to read and explain financial information clearly
  • sound judgement, integrity and respect for confidentiality
  • a collaborative approach and willingness to contribute as part of a volunteer Committee
  • an interest in supporting a community-based organisation that makes a practical difference locally

Experience with community organisations, Neighbourhood Houses, charities, incorporated associations, grants or funded services would be highly regarded.

Time commitment

Committee meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month and usually run for 1–2.5 hours. The Treasurer should also allow approximately 2–3 additional hours per month to review financial papers and support finance-related matters.

A minimum commitment of 12 months is requested. A term of up to 2 years would be highly desirable.

Requirements

The successful applicant will need to obtain and maintain a valid volunteer Working With Children Check and complete any required eligibility, conflict of interest and responsible person checks.
