Dogs Canberra is a growing Canberra charity using the companionship of dogs to improve mental health and strengthen community connections. Through programs including our Community Walking Program, wellbeing events, and assorted support initiatives, we're creating opportunities for both people and dogs to thrive.
As our organisation continues to grow, we're looking for a Community Manager to help coordinate and develop our Community Walking Program. This is an opportunity to play a key role in connecting people with dogs while helping create meaningful experiences for our volunteers, foster carers and the wider community.
Position and Responsibilities
We're looking for a friendly, organised and motivated Community Manager to oversee the day-to-day coordination of our Community Walking Program. Working closely with the Secretary, Directors, foster carers and Community Officers, you'll help ensure our walking program runs smoothly while continuing to grow one of Dogs Canberra's flagship community initiatives.
Key responsibilities include (full Position Description available on request):
Community Member Management:
- Act as the primary point of contact for Community Members participating in the Walking Program.
- Coordinate the onboarding of new walkers, including inductions, OHS requirements, ID verification and Community Member ID allocation.
Walking Program Coordination:
- Manage the Walking Program booking system and oversee walk scheduling.
- Support and coordinate a team of Community Officers assisting with the program.
Foster Carer & Dog Liaison:
- Liaise with foster carers regarding dog availability, preferences and scheduling.
- Coordinate updates affecting walk availability, including adoptions or medical changes.
- Share feedback from walkers to help support each dog's wellbeing and development.
Feedback, Reporting & Program Development:
- Collect feedback from Community Members to help improve the Walking Program.
- Monitor participation trends and assist with program reporting.
- Work collaboratively with the Foster Manager and management team to continue developing and expanding the Walking Program.
There is also the opportunity to become involved in other aspects of the organisation, whether on the ground in Canberra or remotely.
About You
We're looking for someone who enjoys bringing people together and creating positive community experiences.
Experience in volunteer coordination, customer service, community engagement, administration or program management is highly desirable. Experience working with volunteers, community organisations or animal welfare is welcomed but not essential. A love of dogs is certainly a bonus!
You'll be someone who communicates confidently, enjoys working with people and can manage multiple moving parts while maintaining a high level of organisation and attention to detail.
On average, we expect this position will require around 6–12 hours per week, although this may vary depending on bookings, volunteer activity and organisational priorities.
While some preference is given to applicants located within the ACT, this position is also suitable for remote volunteers. Applicants located within Canberra may have additional opportunities to assist with First Time Walks (Supervised walks) and community events.
