Electronic Frontiers Australia Inc (EFA) was founded in 1994, and is a national not-for-profit membership organisation dedicated to ensuring that technology makes our lives better, not worse. It has been registered with ACNC since 2024.
EFA works to protect the digital rights of Australians through public advocacy, general education, and submissions and participation in consultation processes. Key areas of activity are around surveillance/privacy, security, online control/censorship, and copyright. If you are worried about the erosion of rights online, we can harness your passion to help protect all Australians.
Recently EFA has been visible in the media and making submissions relating to Australia’s social media age restrictions, AI, privacy, freedom of information, and whistleblowing. However, the focus areas shift in response to government and corporate actions.
We are particularly keen to hear from candidates from diverse backgrounds, and strongly encourage young people, women, LGBTQIA+ people, First Nations people, culturally and linguistically diverse people, and people with disabilities to apply. If you are unsure about your experience or have concerns about performing all the Treasurer's duties, we encourage you to apply, and have a conversation with us about how we can support you in this role.
The existing Treasurer is planning to retire, and EFA is seeking a financially-literate individual with an interest in digital rights to join the board to replace them. As a result, there will be a hand-over process from the existing Treasurer to support the new board member. We do not require a candidate to have an accounting background.
The EFA Board is an active board, and is responsible for EFA policy formulation, decision making and oversight of organisational activities and administration. Board members act in a voluntary capacity, and are not remunerated for time spent on EFA activities.
The Treasurer position is an executive / officer role on the board, and has the following duties:
- Administration/controller of accounting and financial systems.
- Lead administrator for EFA banking facilities
- Communicating as required with ATO and other regulatory bodies, coordinating with the Secretary as necessary.
- Engaging and communicating with the EFA external auditor.
- Preparing and presenting relevant monthly/quarterly/annual financial reports, budgets, and related materials to the Board.
- Ensuring compliance with relevant financial and legal obligations, including tax and audit requirements.
- Managing EFA’s bank accounts, payments, and receipts.
- Developing and implementing financial policies and procedures in consultation with the Board.
- Advising the Board on financial risks and opportunities.
Board members should reasonably expect to spend around 2 - 3 hours per week supporting EFA functions, campaigns and advocacy. We have a monthly board meeting that usually goes for around 2 hours and is held in the evening on an agreed week night.
A successful candidate will need to meet the criteria to be a Responsible Person with the ACNC, and is expected to become a member of EFA, as well as agree to EFA Ethical Standards.
