Term of Appointment

The Referee & Development Coordinator is appointed annually by the NJBA Committee for the duration of the basketball season, with the opportunity for reappointment based on performance and the needs of the Association.

Remuneration

The position attracts a seasonal contract payment of approximately $5,000.

The final contract value and hours will be determined annually by the NJBA Committee and is subject to:

  • Total player registrations.
  • Number of competition rounds and games conducted.
  • Number of referee allocations required each week.
  • Delivery of referee, player and coach development activities.

The role is expected to require an average commitment of approximately five to six (5-6) hours per week throughout the season. Workload may increase during pre-season, finals, tournaments and development clinics.

Payment arrangements will be agreed upon prior to the commencement of each season.


Position Purpose

The Referee & Development Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, supporting and developing referees within the Narrogin Junior Basketball Association.

The role ensures all competition games are appropriately officiated while providing leadership, mentoring and education for referees. The Coordinator is also responsible for delivering player and coach development opportunities through clinics and educational initiatives that contribute to the ongoing growth of basketball within the Association.

The position works closely with the NJBA Committee to maintain a positive, safe and enjoyable basketball environment for all participants. This position makes up part of the Executive Committee of NJBA.


Key Responsibilities

Referee Management

  • Organise and manage referee appointments for all NJBA competition games.
  • Ensure every scheduled game has suitable referee coverage.
  • Manage referee availability and organise replacements where required.
  • Communicate weekly referee allocations in a timely manner.
  • Be present at every NJBA competition night to oversee officiating operations and provide support.

Referee Development

  • Mentor and support referees throughout the season.
  • Observe referees and provide constructive feedback to improve confidence and performance.
  • Recruit and encourage new referees into the Association.
  • Promote referee retention through ongoing mentoring and support.
  • Coordinate/Organise and be present for one to two (1–2) referee development clinics each season.

Player Development

  • Organise and be present for one to two (1–2) player development clinics each season.
  • Encourage player participation in development opportunities and representative pathways where appropriate.

Coach Development

  • Organise and be present for one to two (1–2) coaching clinics each season.
  • Promote coaching education and continuous development throughout the Association.

Competition Support

  • Assist with resolving officiating issues and rule interpretations during competition.
  • Work collaboratively with the NJBA Committee to ensure competitions operate efficiently.
  • Promote a positive, respectful and inclusive basketball environment.

Administration

  • Maintain referee records, attendance and development activities.
  • Keep referee contact details and availability current.
  • Provide updates and recommendations to the NJBA Committee regarding referee recruitment, development and retention.
  • Use “RefBook” for umpiring scheduling and payment information to be sent to Treasurer
  • Assist with planning the annual referee and development program.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Basketball refereeing experience.
  • Basketball WA referee accreditation - or working towards accreditation
  • Working with Children Check 
  • Current First Aid qualification (desirable).

Expected Commitment

Approximately five to six (5-6) hours per week throughout the basketball season, including:

  • Attendance at every NJBA competition night.
  • Weekly referee allocations and communication.
  • Mentoring referees during games.
  • Planning referee, player and coach development clinics.
  • Administration and reporting alongside rest of NJBA committee
  • Attendance at NJBA Committee meetings with a brief summary/report
  • Complete any required training set out by NJBA

Additional time may be required during pre-season, finals, tournaments or special events.
