Electrician Wanted to Help Run Electrical Repair Shop

Help the next generation learn practical skills while keeping quality electrical items out of landfill.

The Bower is looking for an electrician who would like to pass on their trade, help people repair rather than replace, and become part of a welcoming community of skilled makers and repairers.

Based in our electrical repair workshop at the Inner West Sustainability Hub in Summer Hill, you’ll diagnose faults and help repair household electrical goods. Your contribution will extend the life of useful items, reduce waste and help make repair knowledge more accessible within the community.

Repair also supports The Bower’s wider social impact. Through our House to Home program, quality household goods and essential appliances are prepared for people rebuilding their lives after homelessness, domestic and family violence, displacement or crisis.

What you’ll do

• Assess and diagnose faults in household electrical items
• Carry out safe, reliable repairs within your qualifications and experience
• Help determine whether donated or customer items can be repaired and returned to use
• Share practical knowledge with other repairers, volunteers and community members
• Help maintain safe and organised workshop practices
• Contribute to a supportive community of people who believe in repairing and reusing quality goods

If you enjoy teaching, there may also be opportunities to help deliver practical repair and electrical DIY workshops on weekday evenings or weekends. Workshop involvement is optional and can be arranged around your interests and availability.

What we’re looking for

You will need:

• A recognised electrical trade qualification
• A current NSW electrical licence appropriate to the work
• Strong fault-finding and practical repair skills
• A sound understanding of electrical safety and testing
• A careful, resourceful and solutions-focused approach
• The ability to communicate clearly and work well with people from different backgrounds
• An interest in passing on your trade knowledge
• A commitment to repair, reuse and reducing waste

Experience repairing household appliances or teaching practical skills would be valuable but is not essential.
