Deliver a Nature Drawing session for people living with dementia

Help people living with dementia connect with nature through creativity, observation and gentle outdoor activities.
About CVA Nature Hub
CVA Nature Hub is a welcoming, dementia-inclusive outdoor program delivered by Conservation Volunteers Australia in partnership with Glenorchy City Council and the Venture Out Living Lab at the University of Tasmania. The program supports people living with early-stage dementia and their carers to spend time outdoors, connect socially and take part in meaningful nature-based activities at Chigwell Community Garden and nearby natural areas.
The opportunity
We are looking for creative and patient volunteers to help facilitate a gentle, nature-based drawing session as part of the CVA Nature Hub program.
The session will invite participants to slow down, notice details in the garden and surrounding natural areas, and express what they see through drawing. The focus is on enjoyment, confidence and connection rather than technical skill or finished artwork.
What you’ll do
- Plan and facilitate a relaxed 1 hour nature drawing activity
- Provide simple prompts that encourage participants to observe plants, textures, colours, light, wildlife or seasonal changes.
- Support participants to take part at their own pace, with options to sit, walk short distances or simply observe.
- Create a calm, encouraging and inclusive atmosphere.
- Work alongside CVA staff, who will support session safety, participant needs and logistics.
We’re looking for someone who
- Enjoys drawing, nature journalling, visual arts or creative outdoor activities.
- Can explain activities simply and gently.
- Is warm, patient, reliable and respectful.
- Is comfortable working with small groups in an outdoor community setting.
- Is open to learning about dementia-inclusive volunteering.
Training and support
You do not need previous dementia support experience. CVA will provide guidance, session support and dementia inclusivity training before you take part. Activities will be supported by trained CVA staff throughout.
Time commitment and location
This is a short-term volunteer opportunity supporting a one-hour creative activity within the 12-week CVA Nature Hub program. Sessions will take place at Chigwell Community Garden, 11 Karambi Street, Chigwell, and nearby natural areas.
Why volunteer?
- Share your creative interests in a meaningful and accessible way.
- Support people living with dementia and their carers to connect with nature and community.
- Contribute to a local project with social, environmental and wellbeing benefits.
- Be part of a friendly, supported team environment.
