Evergreening Global Alliance (EGA) is an international charitable alliance working to accelerate large-scale landscape restoration, sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.
EGA is seeking experienced GIS & Remote Sensing professionals who would like to contribute their expertise on a voluntary basis to support landscape restoration activities.
This opportunity is suited to professionals and researchers who have at least two years of relevant experience and would like to apply their technical skills to practical restoration, sustainable land management and climate-resilience initiatives.
Depending on experience and availability, volunteers may support EGA to:
- Map project boundaries, restoration sites and priority intervention areas
- Establish and maintain organised geospatial databases
- Analyse satellite imagery using platforms such as GoogleEarth Engine
- Develop land-use and land-cover maps
- Assess vegetation condition, tree-cover change and restoration progress
- Undertake time-series analysis using Landsat, Sentinel and other appropriate datasets
- Calculate and interpret indicators such as NDVI, EVI, vegetation cover and land-cover change
- Identify areas affected by land degradation, deforestation, fire, erosion or climate-related risks
- Establish project baselines and support restoration monitoring frameworks
- Analyse restoration potential and help prioritise intervention areas
- Produce high-quality maps, dashboards, figures and visual materials
- Support biodiversity, carbon, climate-risk and ecosystem-services assessments
- Contribute geospatial evidence to project proposals, donor reports and technical publications
- Develop reproducible analytical procedures, metadata and technical documentation
- Provide GIS support and training
- Assist with quality assurance and validation of field and remotely sensed data
Applicants should have:
- At least 2 years of relevant experience in GIS, remote sensing, spatial analysis or related field
- A relevant qualification or demonstrated professional expertise in geography, environmental science, forestry, natural-resource management, geospatial science, computer science or a related discipline
- Experience using QGIS, ArcGIS or comparable GIS software
- Experience working with satellite imagery, particularly Landsat or Sentinel data
- Good spatial-data management, analysis and map-production skills
- Ability to manage agreed activities within mutually agreed timeframes
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to EGA’s mission/values
The following would be advantageous:
- Experience with Google Earth Engine
- Knowledge of R, Python or other spatial-analysis tools
- Experience developing online maps or geospatial dashboards
- Familiarity with forest and landscape restoration, agroforestry, sustainable agriculture or climate adaptation
- Knowledge of carbon accounting, biodiversity monitoring or land-degradation assessment
- Experience working with projects or organisations in Africa, Asia, the Pacific or other developing regions
- Experience integrating field observations with remotely sensed information
- Ability to communicate technical results to non-specialist audiences
Volunteer arrangements:
Location: Primarily remote (possible project-based or hybrid opportunities)
Duration: Generally expected to continue for approximately 3 to 6 months
Expected contribution: Volunteers typically contribute approximately 8–12hours per week (flexible and agreed according to the volunteer's availability)
Supervision: EGA contact person who will provide guidance, support and coordination
Outputs: Activities or agreed contributions discussed and documented before the volunteer assignment commences
