All Hands on Deck—Join Our Pirate School Crew!

Our last Falie Pirate School was a full house and tremendous fun. Young pirates tied knots, cracked signal-flag codes, tested their compass skills and discovered South Australia’s maritime heritage. Now we are assembling a new volunteer crew for two school-holiday adventures—don’t miss the boat!

Dates: Wednesday, 30 September and Wednesday, 7 October 2026
Time: 9:30 am–12:30 pm
Location: Milledge’s Distillery, 8A Todd Street, Port Adelaide
Commitment: Volunteer for one session or both

What You Will Do

Working alongside our Program Coordinator and other volunteers, you will:

  • welcome children aged 7–12 and their families;
  • help young pirates with knot tying, signal flags, compasses and maps;
  • encourage children as they complete each challenge;
  • help distribute and collect activity materials;
  • support a safe, friendly and inclusive environment;
  • assist with setup and pack-down; and
  • bring plenty of enthusiasm, encouragement and pirate spirit!

The Program Coordinator leads each session. Volunteers receive instructions, practical demonstrations and support throughout the program. You will not be expected to run the program independently.

Who We Are Looking For

You do not need teaching, maritime or previous pirate experience—we will show you what to do!

This opportunity may particularly suit teachers, education students, retired educators, youth or community-services students, parents, grandparents and anyone who enjoys helping children learn.

We are looking for people who are:

  • friendly, patient and encouraging;
  • comfortable interacting with children and families;
  • reliable and committed to attending once confirmed;
  • able to follow child-safety and program instructions;
  • willing to work cooperatively as part of a team; and
  • ready to join in and have some fun.

A current South Australian Working with Children Check is required before participating.

About Historic Ketch Falie Inc.

Historic Ketch Falie Inc. is a South Australian charitable organisation dedicated to preserving and sharing the maritime heritage of the historic auxiliary ketch Falie. Through education, community programs and heritage activities, we help people of all ages discover the vessel’s remarkable history and Australia’s wider maritime story.

What You Will Gain

Volunteering with Pirate School offers an opportunity to:

  • gain practical experience supporting children’s learning;
  • develop confidence in activity facilitation and community engagement;
  • use or strengthen your teaching and communication skills;
  • learn more about maritime history;
  • meet friendly, community-minded people; and
  • help create a memorable school-holiday experience for children.

Most importantly, it is lively, rewarding and genuinely good fun!

Your Impact

Your encouragement will help children build confidence, try new skills and connect with maritime history through imagination and hands-on learning. Every volunteer helps us provide a safe, engaging and enjoyable experience for our young pirates.

How to Apply

Apply through SEEK Volunteer and tell us:

  • which date—or both dates—you can attend;
  • why you would like to join the Pirate School crew; and
  • whether you already hold a Working with Children Check.

Suitable applicants will have a brief informal conversation with us before confirmation and will receive a program briefing.

Because activities and volunteer coverage are planned around confirmed numbers, please apply only if you genuinely intend and reasonably expect to attend your selected session. We understand that genuine illness and emergencies can occur; if circumstances change, please notify us as early as possible.
