About the Role

Reporting to the Community Coordinator, the Cancer Council Information Support Volunteer helps deliver information and support services at St George Cancer Centre, providing emotional and practical support to patients and carers affected by cancer. Volunteers should be comfortable talking with patients and carers and working in a hospital environment where they may encounter people at different stages in their cancer experience. 

 

Empathy, compassion, and strong communication skills are essential. This is a long-term volunteer role, based at the cancer centre one day a week for minimum 12 months. Volunteers work to weekly roster but flexible with holiday leave. Access to a mobile smart device is required. Full training and ongoing support will be provided, and you will be joining an experienced, welcoming team of volunteers. 

 

 

Key Tasks of the Position

  • Provide evidence-based cancer information and refer potential clients to Cancer Council’s support services

  • Assist cancer patients undergoing treatment including a listening ear, blankets and tea or coffee

  • Keep up to date on the services and resources provided by Cancer Council by participating in training and regular communication with your manager

  • Adhere to Cancer Council and Local Health District policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment, e.g. vaccinations

  • Treat all personal information as confidential, and respect the privacy and confidentiality of others

  • Use Cancer Council systems to support the delivery of the service

 

About You

  • Confident communicator with strong customer service skills

  • Able to empathise and listen to others

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills

  • Knowledge of, and/or a willingness to learn about Cancer Council services and programs

  • Punctual and reliable to attend rostered shifts
