Join Our Volunteer Visitor Program: Make a Difference in the Life of an Elderly Resident
Brighten someone's day and make a meaningful contribution to their quality of life! Our 1:1 volunteer visiting program helps increase connectedness and happiness among aged care residents.
We are looking for special people who puts compassion, connection and caring for others at the heart of everything they do.
We have a special resident who is particularly in need of a regular visitor and would welcome your application.
'Hank' is a lovely gentleman who has travelled extensively during his life working as a ship’s mechanic. He has a wonderful wealth of life experience and would particularly enjoy having someone to chat with about engines, ships, travel and his many adventures.
Hank would greatly benefit from having a friendly male visitor who can spend regular one-on-one time with him, share conversation and build a genuine friendship.
We are particularly looking for a male volunteer who is comfortable working with people living with dementia and who would enjoy getting to know Hank and sharing in his interests.
What You’ll Do:
- Spend quality one-on-one time together
- Listen to and share life stories
- Talk about engines, ships, travel and other interests
- Read books, play cards, or work on puzzles
- Listen to favourite music
- Simply enjoy companionship
Why Volunteer?
Many elderly Australians in aged care homes face loneliness and social isolation. By volunteering just one hour a fortnight, you can make a significant difference in someone's life.
You'll be matched one-on-one with a resident who could greatly benefit from your friendship, companionship and regular presence. For someone like Hank, having a familiar person to look forward to seeing and sharing conversation with can make a wonderful difference.
Program Details:
- Dedication: Our special volunteers are people who are willing and able to visit their new friend at least 20 times or more over a twelve-month period
- Requirements: Must be over 18 years old, pass a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History check (NCCHC) (we will provide assistance, and cover any associated costs) and be available to visit consistently.
Ideal Volunteers:
- Exhibit care and compassion for the elderly
- Are comfortable and patient when spending time with people living with dementia
- Have excellent communication and listening skills
- Enjoy conversation and are interested in learning about other people's lives
- Are committed and punctual
- Ideally have an interest in engines, ships, mechanics or travel
What You’ll Gain:
- The chance to form a long-lasting, meaningful friendship
- Be part of a friendly team with a strong community spirit
- Experience the joy of enriching the life of someone who may otherwise experience loneliness
- The opportunity to share stories, interests and experiences with a wonderful older person
