Volunteer Brand Identity Designer

Rethink Australia Foundation Ltd

Volunteer Brand Identity Designer

Rethink Australia Foundation Ltd is a youth-led environmental organisation helping schools and students reduce waste through education, technology and practical action.

As Rethink Australia grows, we are seeking a visually skilled Volunteer Brand Identity Designer to develop a distinctive, professional and consistent identity for the organisation.

This is a hands-on design role. The volunteer will review our current identity and create a practical brand system covering colour, typography, visual style and application across digital and printed materials.

Key responsibilities

• Review the current brand identity and identify areas for improvement
• Develop a visual direction reflecting Rethink Australia’s mission and audiences
• Create primary and secondary colour palettes
• Select accessible typography for headings, body text and digital use
• Refine existing logo use and recommend improvements where appropriate
• Develop rules for imagery, icons, illustration, shapes and graphic elements
• Create a consistent visual hierarchy and layout approach
• Design examples for the website, social media, presentations and documents
• Develop reusable templates or sample applications where appropriate
• Produce a clear and practical brand guidelines document
• Organise and hand over editable source files, colour values, font information and exported assets
• Collaborate with the CEO and relevant brand, design, website and communications volunteers
• Incorporate feedback and prepare the final identity for approval

Expected deliverables

The project is expected to produce:

• A brand colour palette with HEX, RGB, CMYK and accessibility guidance
• Primary and secondary typography recommendations
• Logo usage, spacing, sizing and background guidance
• Direction for photography, icons, illustration and graphic elements
• Examples for website, social media, presentations and documents
• A concise brand guidelines document
• Organised editable source files and approved exported assets

The final scope will be agreed with the successful applicant before work begins.

About you

We are looking for someone with strong visual judgement and experience or training in brand identity, graphic design, visual communication or art direction.

Applicants should understand colour theory, typography, layout, brand consistency and designing for different formats and audiences. Experience using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Figma or equivalent professional design software is highly regarded.

The successful applicant will be able to explain design decisions clearly, work from a brief, respond constructively to feedback and create a system that others can apply consistently.

Professional experience is highly regarded, but emerging designers with a strong portfolio are also encouraged to apply. A portfolio demonstrating brand identity, visual systems, typography or related design work is required.

Relationship to other roles

The Brand Identity Designer will create the visual identity system and brand guidelines. This differs from the Brand Strategy Advisor, who focuses on positioning and audiences, and the Graphic Designer, who creates ongoing materials using the approved identity.

The Website & UI Designer and communications volunteers will apply the approved brand system across Rethink Australia’s website and public communications.

Why volunteer with Rethink Australia?

This is an opportunity to shape the long-term visual identity of an ambitious youth-led environmental organisation.

Your work will help Rethink Australia communicate professionally and consistently with schools, students, volunteers, supporters, prospective partners and the wider community.

Approved work may be included in the volunteer’s professional portfolio, subject to acknowledgement and confidentiality requirements.

Location and commitment

The role is online or remote friendly. Approximately three to five hours per month is anticipated for an initial period of up to six months. Work is flexible, with milestones and deadlines agreed in advance.

Ownership and approval

All concepts and final materials must be approved by Rethink Australia. The successful applicant will provide editable source files and permit Rethink Australia to use, reproduce and adapt approved materials. Third-party fonts, images and assets must be identified and appropriately licensed.

How to apply

Please apply through SEEK Volunteer and include a CV or LinkedIn profile and a portfolio showing relevant brand identity, typography, visual system or graphic design work.

Student, personal and professional projects are welcome. Please do not submit confidential work or material you do not have permission to share.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an introductory online conversation. Reference checks may be conducted before appointment.
