There are various roles and opportunities on the day and days leading up to the event. Here is a list of a couple of opportunities:
- Welcoming and directing riders at rest stops, the finish line, or the event village
- Handing out food, water, and supplies at rest stops
- Assisting with event village setup and pack-down
- Supporting the Flying Squad, moving between locations as needed throughout the day
Skills and experience needed:
No prior experience or cycling knowledge is required — just a friendly attitude, reliability, and a willingness to be on your feet and outdoors for your shift. Roles suit people of all backgrounds, including students, professionals, and community groups.
Organisational background:
Bicycle Network is Australia’s largest bike riding organisation, working to get more people riding bikes more often through advocacy, community programs, and major events like Around the Bay.
Benefits of volunteering with us:
Volunteers receive a Bicycle Network uniform, a front-row view of one of Melbourne’s biggest cycling events, and the chance to be part of a supportive team. It’s a great way to build event experience, meet new people, and give back to the cycling community.
Impact:
Volunteers are essential to keeping riders safe, supported, and motivated throughout the day — the event simply couldn’t run without them.
Extra steps to apply:
A valid Working with Children Check is required for all volunteers, given the event’s Child Safe culture and family participation.
