Volunteer Media Adviser – Help Us Get More From Media
About Get Around Caboolture
Get Around Caboolture is a community NFP organisation working for more transport choice for people in Caboolture, Qld and surrounding communities.
We work on practical transport issues including public transport, walking, cycling, road safety and accessibility. We are also developing projects that bring community experience and professional expertise into transport advocacy.
The opportunity
How do we get more from media?
We are looking for an experienced media professional who would like to help us answer that question.
You might be a retired or semi-retired journalist, editor, media adviser, communications professional or PR practitioner who would enjoy using your experience in a different setting.
We aren't simply looking for someone to write media releases. We want someone who can help us think about how media could support the work we are doing — and whether particular media opportunities are worth pursuing in the first place.
You could help us explore questions such as:
- Why should we be seeking media coverage?
- What makes our work a good story?
- Which of our projects are likely to interest different types of media?
- Who should we be talking to?
- When should we approach them?
- How do we build useful relationships with journalists?
- How can we make better use of local, mainstream and specialist media?
Some interesting work is already underway
We have an upcoming Week Without Driving initiative and want to work out how to make the most of the media opportunities around it.
We are also developing a Transport Legal Policy Lab, where law students investigate real transport policy questions. We think this may have interest beyond our local community, including among legal and transport professionals, but we would like someone with media experience to help us work out how to approach this.
These are just 2 examples of the work you could help us think about.
About you
You will have substantial experience in media, journalism, communications or public relations and be willing to share your knowledge with a small community organisation.
You don't need experience in transport.
We're interested in someone who understands what makes a story, knows how the media works and can help us develop a more strategic approach.
You might be retired, semi-retired or simply looking for a meaningful volunteer role where your professional experience can be put to good use.
This is a flexible volunteer role. The level of involvement can be discussed with the right person.
How to express your interest
Please tell us briefly about your relevant experience.
In the comment box, please include 2–3 sentences about:
- why this role interests you
- what experience you could bring
- what you think we could achieve together
We'd particularly like to hear from someone who has spent years working with the media and would enjoy putting that experience to work in a community organisation.
What happens next
We will provide further information about Get Around Caboolture, the projects we are working on and what we are hoping to achieve when we respond to expressions of interest.
This is an unpaid volunteer position.
