Come Aboard — Take the Helm and Help Shape Falie’s Future

Historic Ketch Falie Inc. is looking for several new volunteer Board members as a number of long-serving members prepare to retire.
This is a planned renewal, and a real opportunity to bring fresh experience, ideas and energy into the organisation.
We are looking for people who want to be involved, contribute thoughtfully and help shape what comes next.
About Historic Ketch Falie Inc.
Historic Ketch Falie Inc. is a South Australian not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and legacy of the historic ketch Falie.
Our work includes maritime heritage, education, community engagement, research, digital heritage, fundraising, volunteer programs, events and partnerships.
We want Falie’s story to remain meaningful and accessible, not only to people who already know her history, but to future generations as well.
Quiet Ships, Quiet Men
A major current project is Quiet Ships, Quiet Men, a documentary and heritage initiative supported through the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program.
The project explores the largely forgotten story of Australia’s wartime auxiliary vessels and the men who served aboard them — ordinary working vessels called into extraordinary service during the Second World War.
Falie provides an important connection to that story.
The project brings together documentary production, historical research, education and community engagement, and new Board members will be joining at a particularly active time.
What you would do
As a Board member, you will help guide the organisation and contribute to practical, informed decisions.
Depending on your skills and interests, this may include:
- Participating in Board meetings
- Helping set priorities and direction
- Supporting governance, finance and risk oversight
- Contributing to grants, fundraising and sponsorship
- Assisting with education, heritage and community projects
- Supporting communications and digital development
- Building relationships with government, business and community organisations
- Applying your own professional or community experience
- Helping turn ideas into achievable outcomes
We do not expect every Board member to do everything. We want people with different strengths who are willing to share responsibility and contribute where they can be most useful.
Who we are looking for
You do not need to be a maritime historian or have previous involvement with Falie.
We would welcome people with experience in governance, business, finance, fundraising, communications, education, heritage, media, legal and risk, IT, project management, volunteer management, events, tourism or stakeholder engagement.
Previous Board experience is helpful, but not essential.
More important is that you are reliable, constructive and comfortable working with others. We value people who listen, ask good questions, bring ideas and are willing to challenge respectfully when needed.
Why join us?
This is a chance to use your experience in a way that can make a visible difference.
You may help preserve an important part of South Australia’s maritime heritage, contribute to a significant documentary project, strengthen education and community programs, develop new partnerships and help guide the organisation into its next stage.
For someone considering a first Board role, it offers practical governance experience. For someone with established experience, it provides an opportunity to apply those skills to meaningful community work.
How to apply
Please send us a brief expression of interest telling us:
- A little about yourself
- Your relevant skills or experience
- What interests you about Historic Ketch Falie Inc.
- Why you would like to join the Board
- What you believe you could contribute
A formal Board résumé is not essential.
Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an informal discussion with Board representatives. We see this as a two-way conversation — a chance for us to get to know you and for you to decide whether the role feels right for you.
If you have ever thought, “I’d like to use my experience to do something that actually matters,” we would like to hear from you.
Falie has a remarkable past. We are looking for people who want to help shape her future. Come aboard.
