Nursery Experience – Westwood Nursery, Trees For Life

Trees For Life - Bush For Life

Trees For Life is currently looking to recruit a small number of volunteers to help at our Westwood Nursery.

This is a supervised volunteer role that meets Mutual Obligation requirements for Job Seekers.

The main activity at this time of year is box filling, which assists with the delivery of our Tree Scheme program. Box filling is a physical activity and requires accurately shovelling potting mix into foam boxes on a trolley, then lifting and loading full boxes onto a pallet. Full boxes weigh approximately 15kg each. This activity requires a reasonable level of strength and stamina and suits working individually or in pairs. Volunteering hours are between 9am and 3pm, Monday to Friday.

If you are interested in helping with this task, please email [email protected]++ or call 08 8406 0500 and let us know which day/s you are available.

On occasion, we look to keep on our box filling volunteers to help with nursery propagation, weeding, and maintaining our Tree Scheme backup stock through Summer and Autumn. Below are explanations of these activities.

Propagation of nursery orders
This involves helping to transplant and pot up seedlings and cuttings. This activity requires being able to stand at a bench, shovel potting mix into crates, lift 10kg weights, wheel a trolley into the shade house, and lift crates of plants onto benches. This activity mainly occurs through Spring and Summer.

Weeding
This activity may be carried out under shelter or outdoors, moving along our benches hand-weeding. It occurs throughout the year.

Helping to grade and maintain our Tree Scheme backup stock
Seedlings are kept in foam boxes at ground level. This activity requires lifting individual boxes of seedlings (approx. 15kg) from ground level onto a trolley or workbench, then sorting by size and weeding. Correct manual handling requires bending the knees and keeping a straight back. Boxes then need to be returned to their correct position within their zones.

If you are interested in staying on to help with any of these activities, please let us know when you register your interest in box filling.

To apply, email [email protected]++ or call 08 8406 0500.
