Recovery Volunteer – CARE Team – Northern Rivers

The CARE Team Recovery Volunteer Role

As part of the CARE Team (Community Assistance & Recovery Engagement), a Recovery Volunteer supports communities impacted by disasters or other major crisis events by assisting the St Vincent de Paul NSW Society NSW (Vinnies) in delivering practical, emotional, and social support to individuals and families.

Key Responsibilities

• Welcoming and supporting people at Recovery Centres

• Listening and providing compassionate support to people affected by crisis / disaster

• Assisting with Vinnies emergency relief support such as vouchers or grants

• Providing information and referrals to available support services

• Supporting other local Vinnies members and volunteers during recovery operations

The volunteers we are seeking will ideally:

• Be respectful, compassionate, and non-judgemental toward all people, including those affected by crisis, fellow volunteers, members, and partner organisations.

• Show empathy and emotional resilience when supporting people who may be distressed or experiencing trauma.

• Be self-aware and proactive in maintaining personal wellbeing, recognising when to seek support or take a break.

• Demonstrate good communication and active listening skills, with the ability to engage sensitively with people from diverse backgrounds.

• Work collaboratively as part of a coordinated team and represent the values and mission of Vinnies in the community.

• Follow direction from team leaders and contribute positively to a safe, supportive, and inclusive team environment.

• Maintain confidentiality and uphold the privacy and dignity of people assisted.

• Support the mission, ethos, and values of the St Vincent de Paul Society and contribute to the goals outlined in the Society’s Strategic Plan.
