Volunteer Board Chairperson

Open Table

Organisational background

Open Table is a Melbourne-based not-for-profit working to increase food security and reduce food waste. We create welcoming spaces where people share meals, access food and build everyday food skills — turning surplus produce into nourishment and connection across Melbourne.

Since 2013 we've grown from a single community lunch to a suite of programs spanning free community lunches, a daily community pantry, fresh food markets, food-based playgroups, social cooking groups and food-waste education — all delivered in partnership with the communities we work alongside.

After 6 years at the helm, our outgoing Chair is stepping down, and we're looking for someone ready to take on the leadership of our Board as we head into an ambitious new phase.

Key duties

The Chairperson provides governance leadership and strategic oversight, working closely with the Board and CEO to steer Open Table toward its mission while ensuring the organisation stays financially sound, well governed and compliant.

Duties include:

  • Chairing four Board meetings and three Standing Committee meetings a year
  • Acting as a trusted advisor to our CEO and leading their annual performance review
  • Working with the Board and CEO to develop and implement strategic and financial priorities
  • Overseeing governance, risk and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Representing Open Table to stakeholders, partners and the community
  • Supporting Board succession planning and the induction of new directors

Skills and experience needed

  • Leadership and governance capability, ideally with not-for-profit or charity board experience
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementation
  • Sound understanding of governance and legislative obligations for charities
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build collaborative relationships
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a small, committed team

Desirable:

  • Legal or compliance background
  • Familiarity with community education and food systems
  • Professional experience in fundraising and partnerships

Benefits of volunteering with us

You'll join a close-knit, values-driven organisation at a pivotal point in its growth — working alongside a committed Board and CEO who value candour, collaboration and getting things done. You'll have real influence over the strategic direction of a well-regarded local charity, and the chance to put senior leadership and governance experience to work on something tangible and community-facing.

The impact of this role

As Chair, you'll help steward an organisation that puts food on the table — literally — for people across Melbourne each week, while helping build the financial and organisational foundations for Open Table to grow its reach over the coming years. Your leadership directly shapes how well the Board governs, how confidently the CEO can lead, and ultimately how much impact Open Table can have in the communities it serves.

To apply for the role of Chairperson, in addition to filling out the SEEK proforma, please send a short cover letter outlining your interest and relevant experience, along with your CV, to [email protected].
