About the organisation

Street Side Medics is a not-for-profit, GP-led mobile medical service for people experiencing homelessness. Our vision is to ensure that all vulnerable individuals requiring healthcare can access it effortlessly, with dignity and respect.

At Street Side Medics make long term commitments to the communities in which we work. By teaming up with local community partners, and delivering our clinics from the same place, at the same time, on the same day, each week, we are able to build lasting relationships and ensure continuity of care.

The team on the ground each week are all volunteers and include GPs, other medical practitioners, registered and enrolled nurses, allied health professionals and other non-medical volunteers that may come from a variety of professional backgrounds. The clinics operate from vans with full medical fit outs, and work in conjunction with other homeless services 6 days a week at 16 locations across NSW, VIC and ACT.

About the role We are currently recruiting drivers to join our Nowra Clinic team and volunteer once a month on a Tuesday driving the van to the clinic location. While the clinic runs for 2-hours, the driver shift is approx 3-4 hours to account for the time either side of the clinic where you pick up and drop off the van.

As a driver, your primary role will include:

  • Van pick up: picking up the van from the storage location in Gerringong and driving it to the clinic location in Nowra to meet the team.

  • Van set up: setting up the van on arrival, including switching on power, setting up chairs, unwinding the awning.

*o Van return: once the clinic finishes, you will pack up the van and drive it back to the storage location in Gerringong.

When on site and throughout the clinic, drivers can fulfill any of the other clinic roles they are qualified and interested in. Often drivers will volunteer as Admin Support or General Volunteers and have conversations with patients and the community. Drivers are also responsible for getting patient feedback, when appropriate, using the paper form that is in the van or using the laminated QR code.

Impact of this role: Our Van Drivers play an invaluable role in our organisation – without them our clinics could not operate.

Benefits of volunteering at Street Side Medics include a chance to become part of a tight knit volunteer community while providing meaningful and immediate support to the most vulnerable amongst us. You will also learn and get access to our key speakers at our annual education days.
