Cantonese-Speaking Volunteer — Bexley
A little time. A familiar voice. A meaningful connection.
Could you spare a little time to brighten the week of an older person living in a residential care facility in Bexley?
We’re looking for a warm, compassionate Cantonese-speaking volunteer who enjoys conversation, connection, and getting to know people.
For an older person, hearing a familiar language and sharing stories about life, family and culture can mean so much. Sometimes, it’s simply having someone there to talk to, laugh with and share a cup of tea.
What could your visits look like?
There’s no set script — just bring your time, your kindness and your personality.
- ☕ Enjoy a relaxed chat over tea or coffee in Cantonese.
- 💬 Listen to stories about their childhood, family, memories and life experiences.
- 🎵 Share music, favourite hobbies, games or cultural traditions.
- 🚶 Take a gentle walk together and enjoy some fresh air.
- 😊 Reminisce, laugh and create new memories.
- ❤️ Most importantly, offer friendship, companionship and a familiar cultural connection.
Why it matters
Everyone has a story.
A friendly conversation. A shared memory. A familiar song. Hearing their own language again.
These simple moments can help an older person feel seen, valued and connected — while giving you the chance to build a rewarding friendship along the way.
You only need to volunteer weekly or fortnightly. A small amount of your time could make a big difference to someone’s day.
Who we’re looking for
You don’t need previous volunteering experience. We’re simply looking for someone who is:
- Caring, friendly and respectful
- Reliable and comfortable spending time with an older person
- Able to speak Cantonese
- Interested in sharing conversation, culture and connection
- Aged 18 or over
Volunteer requirements
- Complete a National Police Check
- Participate in our induction and training
You’ll receive ongoing training, guidance and support from your Program Coordinator throughout your volunteering journey.
Ready to make someone’s day?
If you have a little time to give and believe that language, culture and companionship can bring people closer together, we’d love to hear from you.
Your time could become someone’s favourite part of the week.
