Wyuna/HELP in Hospital Volunteer Role

Grampians Health - Horsham & Dimboola Campus

Volunteers will work closely with the HELP and sub-acute team,

including nursing staff, speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and food services to enhance the wellness and rehabilitation of Wyuna Sub-acute patients and clients.

  • Help to create an age friendly hospital environment by

    providing sympathetic support, encouragement, and

    companionship to older patients and their families.

  • Support the patient with therapeutic activities such as

    puzzles, papers, and books etc., and also ensuring they have

    their glasses and hearing aids etc.

  • Support the subacute team to run activities with residents & provide the HELP team with assistance during meal times when needed.

  • Provide assistance with patients when they are able to walk

    to ensure they stay as mobile as possible.

By volunteering in this role, you will be improving the hospital experience of older patients by visiting them during their hospital stay and providing targeted interventions to prevent any delirium

(confusion) and cognitive decline for the patient.

Volunteers need to be kind, compassionate, respectful, polite and encouraging and will be involved in group activities such as singing, bingo, gardening, games, and puzzles. You should also be willing to talk and listen to people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

  • Volunteers will need to attend additional role specific training

    before commencing in this role.

  • Volunteers need to be understanding and accepting of

    other peoples' beliefs and values.

  • This role is for people who are passionate about working with people within their community.
