Cub Scouts Leader

About the role

Princes Park Scout Group is looking for a positive, reliable and community-minded volunteers to join our Cub Scout leadership team.

Cub Scouts are generally aged 8–11 and take part in a broad range of activities including outdoor adventures, games, camping, hiking, practical skills, creative challenges, teamwork and community activities.

As a Cub Scout Leader, you will work as part of a team to help plan and deliver a safe, engaging and adventurous program that gives young people opportunities to build confidence, independence, resilience and leadership skills.

This is a hands-on volunteer role. You do not need to be an expert in camping, bushcraft or outdoor activities, and previous Scouting experience is not required. Training, support and resources are provided.

What you’ll be doing

Working alongside other Cub Leaders, you will help:

• Plan and deliver regular Cub Scout meetings and activities
• Support camps, excursions, outdoor activities and special events
• Create a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment for young people
• Encourage Cubs to participate, try new things and develop new skills
• Help young people take increasing responsibility for their own program
• Support teamwork and small-group activities
• Teach or facilitate practical, outdoor, creative and life skills
• Help review activities with Cubs and celebrate their progress
• Work collaboratively with other volunteer leaders and parents as part of the Team at Princes Park Scout Group
• Complete the training and requirements associated with becoming an adult Scout Leader

You will gradually become more involved as your confidence and experience grow. New leaders are supported by experienced volunteers and are not expected to run the program alone.

• Can communicate well with young people, parents and other volunteers
• Is reliable and able to make a regular commitment
• Wants to contribute to their local community

Experience in education, youth work, sport, outdoor recreation, coaching or community organisations can be useful, but it is not essential.

Just as importantly, we welcome people who simply want to get involved and are willing to learn.

Time commitment

Our Cub Unit meets regularly during school terms, with occasional weekend activities, camps and other events throughout the year.

We understand that volunteers have work, family and other commitments. The leadership team shares responsibilities, and we aim to make volunteering sustainable rather than expecting one person to do everything. Flexible volunteering options exist.

A regular commitment is important, but you do not need to be available for every activity.

Training and support

Scouts provides structured training for new adult leaders, including youth safety, program delivery and the skills needed to confidently support young people.

You will be supported by the existing leadership team and the wider Scout Group while completing your training and settling into the role.

Relevant checks and mandatory child-safety requirements will need to be completed before undertaking the role.

Scouts also offers a host of opportunities to get involved in specialist teams including adventurous activities teams, major event teams and you can work towards commercially recognisable qualifications through our in-house RTO agency, SAIT.
