Volunteers are an integral part of the RSPCA team. They play an active and vital role in helping to support our work to improve the welfare of animals and protect them from cruelty and neglect. Volunteering involves commitment, dedication and passion.

Role purpose 

As well as contributing to the daily operations and functionality of the Kennels, Kennels Assistants ultimately enhance the environment for dogs in the RSPCA’s care and improve their chance of finding a forever home.

Key tasks

The Kennels Assistant will be responsible for the following activities:

• Exercise, enrichment and socialisation of dogs
• Adhering to Work, Health & Safety protocols to ensure the safe handling of dogs
• Assisting staff in the general cleaning and maintenance of kennels, including but not limited to the removal of faeces, cleaning/hosing of the dog yards, hosing and disinfecting of dog pens
• Changing of bedding and the restocking of bed bins
• Cleaning kitchen and maintaining the water fountains in the arena area
• Preparation of enrichment items

Skills, qualifications, or experience required

To be successful in this role, the volunteer will possess the following necessary skills and attributes:

• Fitness and strength to have the ability to safely handle large breed, untrained and/or boisterous dogs
• Experience walking medium - large breed dogs (minimum dog weight 15kg)
• Experience with unfamiliar dogs, confidence in their presence, and an ability observe behaviour
• Attention to detail and the ability to follow oral and written instructions carefully, especially safety protocols and signage
• General fitness for moderately active shifts, including regular walking, bending and squatting
• Ability to be self-sufficient and work well autonomously within a team environment
• Willingness to work outdoors regardless of the weather conditions
• Preparedness to work in a noisy environment
• Willingness to assist in extra cleaning duties during peak times, as per the Supervisor/Animal Attendant's request
• Ability to clearly communicate with a 2-way radio (training provided)
• Flexibility and willingness to assist in other RSPCA departments as required
• Aged 16 years and over

The following items are required as part of recruitment for this role:

• Medical - proof of tetanus vaccination
• Identity check
• Screen for animal cruelty offenses

Training & support

The following training and support will be provided:

• Animal health and behaviour volunteer orientation training
• On the job training with Animal Attendant staff
• Ongoing opportunity to discuss your role and any concerns with the supervising staff member, Animal Care Team Leader, or Volunteer Program Team.
