St Vincent's Health Australia supported by Volunteering Queensland

Logo for St Vincent's Health Australia

Apply to join our Coffee & Chat Program to help increase connectedness and happiness among aged care residents. We are looking for people who put compassion, connection and caring for other people at the heart of everything they do.

What would you do when you visit an aged care resident?

  • have a chat over a cup of coffee
  • listen to their life stories (most residents love sharing them!)
  • go for a walk to the garden
  • read books, play cards or do puzzles together
  • listen to their favourite music

Why Volunteer?

Many elderly Australians in aged care homes face loneliness and social isolation. By volunteering just one hour a fortnight, you can make a significant difference in someone's life.

You'll be matched one-on-one with a resident who could greatly benefit from your friendship, companionship and regular presence. Having a familiar person to look forward to seeing and sharing conversation with can make a wonderful difference.

Program Details

Dedication: Our special volunteers are people who are willing and able to visit their new friend at least 20 times or more over a twelve-month period

Requirements: Must be over 18 years old, pass a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History check (NCCHC) (we will provide assistance, and cover any associated costs) and be available to visit consistently.

Ideal Volunteers:

  • Exhibit care and compassion for the elderly
  • Are comfortable and patient when spending time with people living with dementia
  • Have excellent communication and listening skills
  • Enjoy conversation and are interested in learning about other people's lives
  • Are committed and punctual

What You’ll Gain:

  • The chance to form a long-lasting, meaningful friendship
  • Be part of a friendly team with a strong community spirit
  • Experience the joy of enriching the life of someone who may otherwise experience loneliness
  • The opportunity to share stories, interests and experiences with a wonderful older person

Ready to Make a Difference?

If you’re looking for a role where you can truly connect with someone and enrich their life, apply to join our volunteer visiting program today.

Our residents are waiting to meet someone who would enjoy hearing about their life, sharing a few stories and becoming a familiar and friendly face, they can look forward to seeing.
