No More Butts is looking for an Online Communities Coordinator to help build meaningful conversations and relationships around our work to eliminate cigarette butt litter and reduce tobacco-related pollution.
The role complements our Social Media Coordinator, who is responsible for creating text copy and publishing No More Butts' regular social content. The Online Communities Coordinator focuses on moderation, active engagement and relationship-building across our own channels and relevant external online communities.
Key duties
- Monitor comments, replies and messages on No More Butts' social media channels
- Respond to questions and comments in a timely, helpful and appropriate manner
- Moderate conversations and help maintain a positive and respectful online environment
- Identify relevant conversations, groups, pages, organisations and influencers where No More Butts can contribute
- Proactively participate in relevant online conversations and communities
- Start genuine conversations and contribute useful information (rather than simply promoting No More Butts)
- Engage with partners, environmental organisations, community groups, researchers, advocates and relevant public figures online
- Identify opportunities for collaboration, amplification, content sharing or further engagement
- Monitor recurring questions, themes and community feedback and share useful insights with the wider team
- Identify spam, inappropriate content, misinformation or potentially harmful interactions and respond or escalate appropriately
- Escalate sensitive, contentious or reputational issues when appropriate
- Support increased online engagement during campaigns, events and other periods of activity
- Work with the wider Marketing Communications team to support consistent and effective community engagement
Skills and experience
We are looking for someone who enjoys being online, understands how digital communities work and is comfortable starting genuine conversations with people they don't already know.
Useful skills and experience include:
- Experience participating in or moderating online communities, social media groups or forums
- Strong written communication and an ability to adapt your tone to different audiences
- Good judgement when engaging with controversial, sensitive or challenging topics
- An understanding of social media culture and online community behaviour
- Confidence engaging proactively rather than waiting for people to come to you
- Ability to remain calm and professional when conversations become challenging
- Good research skills and curiosity about environmental issues and related conversations
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with other volunteers
Professional community management experience is welcome but not essential. We are particularly interested in people who are active online, understand how communities communicate and enjoy finding opportunities to connect people and ideas.
About No More Butts
No More Butts is an Australian environmental charity working to eliminate cigarette butt litter and reduce tobacco-related pollution.
Founded in Queensland, No More Butts works across community engagement, research, advocacy, policy and public education. Our work extends nationally and internationally, including engagement with governments, researchers, environmental organisations and international policy processes.
We are a largely volunteer-led organisation and operate remotely, using cloud-based systems to support our work across Australia and internationally.
Volunteering with us
All No More Butts volunteers give their time generously and flexibly around their other commitments, such as work and family. We aim to give volunteers meaningful responsibility within clearly defined roles, while providing the support and organisational context needed to contribute effectively.
This is an opportunity to help No More Butts become part of more conversations, reach new audiences and build relationships across the wider online community.
If you enjoy social media, online communities, environmental issues and talking to people, this could be a good opportunity to turn those interests into practical impact.
