Animal Ethics Committee member

The AEC operates to ensure that the University complies with the standards required by the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, 8th Edition 2013 (the Code), the ACT Animal Welfare Act 1992, and other relevant State and Territory legislation when undertaking wildlife research or teaching work.

#Requirements

Category C member

In accordance with section 2.2.4 of the Code, a Category C is a person with demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals, who is not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution, and who is not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

Veterinarians with specific animal welfare interest and experience may meet the requirements of this category.

While not representing an animal welfare organisation, the person should, where possible, be selected on the basis of active membership of, and endorsement by, such an organisation.

Category D member

In accordance with section 2.2.4 of the Code, a Category D member is not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution and who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond their undergraduate education.

Category D members should be viewed by the wider community as bringing a completely independent view to the AEC and must not fit the requirements of any other AEC membership category.

#About the Role Meetings are held every 5 weeks, on Tuesdays from 1pm - 5pm (online and occasional meetings in person). Occasionally additional meetings may be required to discuss specific events.

Monthly Tasks - online review of agenda items and out of session items (approximately eight hours per month). Read, assess, and provide written feedback within the Research Ethics Management System (REMS) for collation by the deadline. Annual Tasks - Inspect and approve facilities where research animals are to be housed (Approximately eight hours per year). Appointment - an initial term of six months, which will be reviewed for potential extension for a further three years. Appointments and renewals are subject to the approval of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation). Training - two online modules and induction pack provided by the ANU Ethics Office. Remuneration - Volunteer members (external to ANU) will receive a thankyou payment for each meeting they attend. This payment is processed annually and is not superannuable.
