About the role
Live export shipments out of Broome run to the vessel's schedule, not ours. Trucks arrive from Kimberley stations and feedlots, animals are held, and loading can begin with very little warning — often less than a day's notice, and sometimes at first light or after dark.
We're building a small standby list of people in Broome who can head down to the port at short notice with a phone or camera. The purpose is a clear, dated, honest visual record of the animals and the conditions they're in before they leave — documentation that supports our submissions, our media work, and public understanding of what happens on the wharf.
This is not a roster. You go on a list, we contact you when there's a ship, and you say yes or no each time. There is no minimum and no obligation.
What you'd be doing
- Photographing or filming animals before loading, wherever they're visible from public ground — body condition, signs of heat stress, visible injury or lameness, stocking density in trucks and pens, access to shade and water
- Where it's possible and lawful, capturing the loading process itself, including handling of animals up the ramp
- Where a sightline exists, capturing the vessel, visible deck conditions, and departure — a bonus, never something to take a risk for
- Sending us the untouched original files promptly after the callout
What we're looking for
- You're based in or near Broome and can get to the port at short notice
- You have a mobile phone with a decent camera, or a camera of your own. A zoom lens is useful but not required
- You're comfortable working in heat, sun and dust, sometimes early or late
- You have your own transport, or reliable access to one
- You can follow a brief, stay calm, and walk away when asked
- Skilled photographers and content creators are very welcome — so is anyone steady with a phone. No professional experience is required
Conditions of the role
All work is done from public land and public roads. Volunteers do not enter port land, feedlots, yards or private property, do not obstruct gates, driveways or traffic, and do not approach or engage workers, drivers or police. Any lawful direction from police or port authorities is followed immediately. Drones are not used. Animals are never touched. Footage is sent to us before it's posted anywhere. Your safety and staying within the law come before any image.
