Volunteer Community Companion (Do Care Visiting Program)
Share an Hour, Change a Life
A friendly conversation. A shared cuppa. A regular visit.
These simple moments can make a world of difference to an older person experiencing loneliness or social isolation.
At Colac Area Health, we're looking for caring and compassionate volunteers to join our Do Care Visiting Program and build meaningful friendships with older members of our community. Through regular visits, you'll provide companionship, connection and a sense of belonging to someone who may otherwise have limited social contact.
About the Role
As a Volunteer, you'll be matched with an older person based on shared interests, personality and location. Together, you'll spend time doing simple activities that both of you enjoy.
This could include:
- Sharing a coffee or cup of tea
- Chatting and reminiscing
- Reading newspapers or magazines together
- Playing cards, games or puzzles
- Going for a walk
- Attending community activities
- Helping someone stay connected with family through technology
The commitment is approximately one hour per week or fortnight, with flexibility to suit both you and your visiting friend.
Why Volunteer?
Volunteering isn't just about giving your time. It's about creating connections that enrich lives, including your own.
As a Do Care volunteer, you'll:
- Make a genuine difference in someone's life
- Help reduce loneliness and social isolation
- Meet new people and build meaningful friendships
- Gain a sense of purpose and community connection
- Develop valuable communication and interpersonal skills
- Be part of a supportive and welcoming volunteer team
Many volunteers tell us they gain just as much from the friendship as the person they visit.
Who We're Looking For
You don't need any special qualifications.
We're seeking people who are:
- Friendly, reliable and compassionate
- Good listeners and enjoy connecting with others
- Respectful of different backgrounds and life experiences
- Able to commit to regular visits
- Passionate about supporting older people in our community
Make a Difference Close to Home
One regular visit can brighten someone's week, boost their confidence, and remind them they are valued and connected to their community. The focus is on friendship, companionship and meaningful social connection.
