Volunteer Candidate — Local Government 2028 - AJP Queensland

About the role
We're looking for passionate people to stand as Animal Justice Party candidates in the March 2028 local government elections. We're seeking candidates for the following council areas:
- Douglas Shire
- Western Downs Regional
- Noosa Shire
- Somerset Regional
- Central Highlands Regional
- Southern Downs Regional
- Toowoomba Regional
- Mackay Regional
We're also open to expressions of interest from candidates in other Queensland regions. No political experience is needed — first-time candidates are warmly welcome.
Key duties
- Build your community profile and connect with local residents and groups in the lead-up to the election
- Work with our team to develop your campaign strategy
- Ramp up your time commitment in the final weeks, taking part in door-knocking, events, social media and the final push
- If elected, take on the full responsibilities of a councillor which is a paid role with wages ranging from roughly $60,000 to $170,000 depending on the division, which is a serious commitment that would require stepping away from your current job
Skills and experience
No political experience is required. What matters most is that you:
- Passionate about animals rights who aligns with our values - we care about animals, people and the planet
- Have a visible, likeable presence in your local community
- Have good communication and people skills
- Bring enthusiasm and a willingness to learn

You'll have a brief conversation with our volunteer manager before we invite you to attend an information session, where we'll talk about local candidacy and the Animal Justice Party. If you then progress to the application stage, our selection process includes interviews and background checks, followed by endorsement from our board.
