Harold Hawthorne Community Centre is a not-for-profit organisation based in Carlisle within the Town of Victoria Park. We provide a range of services and programs that support older people and people living with disability to remain independent, connected, and living in their own homes for as long as possible.

We are currently seeking friendly and reliable Volunteer Transport Drivers to help our clients stay connected to their community and access important appointments, services and activities.

Our Volunteer Transport Drivers provide safe and friendly transport for older people and people living with disability who may otherwise have difficulty getting where they need to go.

Using a Harold Hawthorne Community Centre vehicle, you'll collect clients from their homes, transport them to their scheduled destination and, where required, return them home afterwards.

Transport may include trips to medical and allied health appointments, shopping, community activities, social programs and other approved destinations.

For many of our clients, the journey is also an opportunity for a friendly conversation and social connection. Our drivers play an important role in making clients feel comfortable, supported and valued.

Volunteer Transport Drivers are responsible for:

  • Driving Harold Hawthorne Community Centre vehicles safely and responsibly.
  • Collecting clients from their homes at scheduled times.
  • Transporting clients to appointments, activities and other approved destinations.
  • Providing friendly and respectful assistance to clients when entering and exiting the vehicle, where required.
  • Ensuring clients are safely transported and dropped off at the correct destination.
  • Following allocated schedules, routes and transport procedures.
  • Communicating with the team regarding delays, changes or concerns.
  • Completing required transport documentation.
  • Conducting basic vehicle safety checks and reporting any issues.
  • Providing friendly conversation and helping create a positive experience for clients.

Transport Shifts: Volunteer transport operates Monday to Friday during the day.

We welcome volunteers who can commit to regular weekly availability, whether that's one day per week or several days, depending on your availability.

You could volunteer for a whole day (7am - 4pm), or you could volunteer for either an AM (7am - 12pm) or PM (1pm - 4pm) shift.

We're looking for someone:

  • Friendly, reliable and compassionate individuals.
  • Holds a current Australian driver's licence.
  • A safe and responsible approach to driving.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidence working independently and following a schedule.
  • Patience and understanding when supporting older people and people living with disability.
  • A genuine interest in helping people remain independent and connected to their community.
  • Ability to follow procedures and communicate any concerns to staff.

No previous transport or community services experience is necessary. Full training and ongoing support will be provided.

By volunteering as a Transport Driver, you'll provide more than a ride - you'll help our clients maintain their independence, attend important appointments and activities, and stay connected with their local community.
