About us

The Wildflower Society of WA has been helping members of the public to know, grow, conserve and enjoy Western Australia's beautiful wildflowers since 1958.

Our nursery in Perth's northern suburbs (The WA Wildflower Nursery) is run entirely by volunteers and grows around 20,000 plants each year, many of which are rare and endangered in the wild. By growing these plants and encouraging them to be planted in home gardens, we ensure they will not become extinct.

About our opportunity

As one of our nursery volunteers, you will learn how to grow new plants from cuttings and seeds, and care for the plants until they are ready for sale. You will be required to:

  • Take cuttings from mature plants, prepare them to encourage rooting; and pot them up once they have rooted
  • Collect, treat and sow seeds, and pot up seedlings
  • Check developing plants to ensure they are making good progress, are healthy and free from weeds
  • Move stock around the nursery as the plants grow and develop
  • Keep records and enter data (paper based)

You will also have the chance to learn how to create and care for native gardens; assist customers to select plants suitable for their location and personal preferences, and propagate plants through grafting.

No gardening or propagating experience is required as you will be fully trained in our processes.

About our existing volunteers

We currently have around 60 volunteers involved with our nursery. On any given day we may have as many as 20 people working. They range in age from mid 20's to mid 80's; have a range of professional backgrounds; and come from all walks of life.

Interested? Give it a no obligation try

You are welcome to come and give it a try during New Volunteer Week. If you decide you like being involved and would like to continue, you will be enrolled in our Volunteer Training Program.

You will need to become a member of the Wildflower Society of WA so that you are covered by our volunteer insurance policy.

New Volunteer Week and our Volunteer Training Program

We accept new volunteers during the first full week of each month. Our New Volunteer 'Come and Try' Days run from 9am to midday, so please arrive a few minutes before 9am.

Dates for the rest of 2026 are as follows:

  • Thursday Oct 8th
  • Saturday Oct 10th
  • Thursday Nov 5th
  • Saturday Nov 7th
  • Thursday Dec 10th
  • Saturday Dec 12th

Once you have tried volunteering with us and decided that you would like to be involved long-term, you will join our Volunteer Training Program. Each week you will receive training in one nursery process until you are competent in all of the tasks involved. You will then be trained in another process, and then another.

During your participation in the Training Program we require you to attend each week from 9am to 12pm. The training program will take at least 4 session (weeks) to complete but could take as long as 12 weeks - it depends upon how quickly you master the tasks involved. Once you are fully trained you do not have to attend every week or on the same day each week if this does not suit your lifestyle.

How to apply

We do not accept applications via the 'apply' button, so please don't press it! :-)

Where to find us

Our nursery is located on the corner of Hartman Drive and Kingsway in Madeley, but the entrance is off Sporting Drive in the Kingsway Sporting Complex. We are directly opposite the Kingsway Dog Park and at the end of the side street called Village Place.

There is parking right outside the nursery, and plenty of additional parking throughout the Kingsway Complex. However, Netball Season runs from May to October and parking on Saturdays during this time can be difficult. You may have to park some distance from the nursery, so please leave yourself extra time.
