Patient Companion - Emergency Department

Mater Volunteers

Patient Companion volunteers provide companionship, care and support to patients, family members and visitors in the Mater Emergency Department. Experience in communicating with a broad range of people and the ability to work in busy, face paced environment are essential skills for this role.

Patient Companion duties include, providing people in the waiting room, acute and short stay areas with:

  • tea & coffee & refreshments (where applicable)
  • general hospital information e.g. car parking / location of cafes blankets
  • escort to services on campus
  • companionship to patients & family members
  • escort family members to patient bedsides
  • assist with discharges to Transit Lounge or Ambulance Bay area

Available shifts are: Monday 2pm-5pm & Friday 11am-2pm & 2pm-5pm.

Volunteers must be able to commit to the same 3hr shift weekly, for a minimum period of 4 months. All Mater Volunteers receive on boarding and supported training to ensure confidence in the role.
