One hour can create a genuine sense of connection

  • Jack is a gentleman living in aged care who has no family to visit. He would love the company of a regular volunteer visitor.
  • He enjoys a good chat, spending time outdoors, and relaxing in the facility's garden.
  • A volunteer who is happy to sit, talk, share stories, and enjoy the fresh air together could make a meaningful difference to his week.

💞 Why Your Support Matters 💞

Loneliness can have a significant impact on wellbeing. A regular visitor can help an older person feel seen, valued, and connected. Your visits could become a highlight of Jack's fortnight and provide a friendship he genuinely looks forward to.

Sometimes companionship is built through conversation, sometimes through shared silence in a peaceful garden setting. What matters most is your presence.

🧩 What a Visit Might Look Like

• Strolling or sitting together in the garden
• Sharing a cup of tea or coffee and chatting about everyday life
• Talking about hobbies, interests, memories, or current events
• Listening to music, playing a simple game, or enjoying quiet company
• Simply being there and offering companionship

No special skills or aged care experience are needed. Warmth, patience, reliability, and a genuine interest in connecting with another person are what matter most.

✨ What is ACVVS? ✨

The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) connects volunteers with older people who may be socially isolated, creating regular friendship, companionship, and meaningful connection.

St Vincent's Health is seeking volunteers who share our commitment to compassion, excellence, justice, and integrity, and who want to bring those values to life through genuine connection with older people.

Every friendship is unique. Some visits are filled with conversation, while others are built around a shared activity, enjoying nature, or simply spending time together.

🌈 Who Could Be a Great Fit? 🌈

You may be a wonderful match if you are:

• Kind, friendly, and dependable
• Comfortable chatting and building relationships over time
• Happy to spend time outdoors in a garden setting
• Able to visit regularly and provide ongoing companionship

You do not need to entertain, solve problems, or provide personal care. Your role is friendship.

The Practical Bits

• You must be 18 years or over
• A Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check is required and is organised and funded by St Vincent's
• Visits are approximately 30 minutes to one hour
• Visits take place at least once a fortnight throughout the year
• We are seeking someone who can commit to building a consistent, respectful friendship

🌟 Could You Be That Familiar Face? 🌟

If you enjoy meaningful conversation, appreciate the calming influence of a garden, and can spare an hour every fortnight, we'd love to hear from you.

Together, you can create friendship, connection, and moments that truly matter.

At St Vincent's, we value inclusion and diversity. We are committed to creating an environment that is welcoming, safe, fair, and inclusive, and we invite people from all backgrounds to join our caring community.
