Fitzroy Scout Group is looking for an Group Leader to lead our volunteer team.

About Fitzroy Scout Group

Based at the Atherton Gardens Public Housing Estate, Fitzroy Scout Group provides access and opportunity for young people to learn through adventure in Scouting.

We work with our communities, neighbours, and supporters to reduce or remove economic barriers to participation.

By providing free access to Scouting, we support young people (especially from migrant and refugee families) to engage in Scouting and build skills for life.

About the role

In this leadership role, you will be trained to support section leaders to run and organise a program of adventurous and educational activities for kids aged 8-10 and 11-14, including camps, weekly activities, outdoor adventures and practical learning. Primary responsibilities include overseeing recruitment and management of volunteer Leaders, and ensuring weekly programs are well planned and delivered safely.

You will also work closely with the Group Support Committee (led by our Group Chair) who oversee the fundraising, finances and operations of the Scout Group.

Is there training or skill building?

You will have opportunities to develop your leadership and teamwork skills, and can work towards professional qualifications (such as Certificate IV in Leadership and Management or Certificate IV in Coordination of Volunteer Programs) through your Scouts training, via the Scouts Australia Institute of Training.

Why are we looking for a new Group Leader?

Our current Group Leader is finishing in the role due to moving away from the area, but is available to support the induction and transition for the new Group Leader.

Commitment

Regular - more than 6 months

Training

Compulsory E-Learning Modules (including Child Safe) and residential training weekend aimed at teaching Scouting skills and our educational method. First Aid training available but not compulsory. Other training, according to your aspirations within the organisation.

Time required

Requires a commitment to being regularly available to manage the operations of the Scout Group, but there is lots of flexibility of when across the week the work is done. In terms of set times/days, the Group Support Committee currently meets once per month on a Wednesday night. May sometimes involving supporting weeknight programs on Tuesday and Thursday nights, or weekend activities, but this can be arranged around your availability and would not be compulsory.

Reimbursement

All training and equipment costs excluding fuel. Fuel may be reimbursed for longer travel (i.e. camps) on prior arrangement.

Requirements

Working with Children Check

Completion of a National Criminal History Check (organised via Scouts Victoria, no cost), and holding a Victorian Working with Children check (free for volunteers) are required as part of the application process.
